What did you do in the garden today?

I finished the mowing yesterday afternoon. I still need to do the weed whacking. I’m running errands this morning but I hope to get a little work done on the garden on the back hill. I decided to plant the mini watermelons in grow bags and trellis them but that can wait. I need to get that garden prepped and planted with green beans. I wanted to do pole beans there but I think bush beans are a better idea with the local deer family. The summer squash will go there as well. My clematis is getting ready to bloom. All I know is that it’s purple. It came with the house. I bought one to plant at the base of one of the giant stumps. I’m trying to get flowers planted soon.

I saved nasturtium seeds last year. I wasn't expecting them to germinate because they weren't in the greatest condition when I scooped them off the ground (lots were spongy even after drying for a few weeks). But quite a few did germinate, and I am going to try to save a ton more this year!

Could be glacier deposit
We have various rocky areas. I think that the farmer who owned the field just dumped them "over the hill," as there are lots of big rocks in some places, especially going down to the creek bed.

They also dumped an old stove, the bed of a pickup truck, rolls of barbed wire fence, and other large trash. It's sad. We've gotten some of the stuff out, but some of it will be there until it rusts away.

Originally, it was probably a glacier that moved the rocks and left them behind. I ran into lots of rocks when I dug the holes for the trees and bushes I've been planting the last couple of weeks.

Hahaha so funny, I was looking for help for my mom but found some laughs instead. 😊
I can relate with this dude. Those little jerks went thru my starts on the table that I was hardening off & pulled them out of their pots! Dirt everywhere, such carnage for no reason. My garden beds are covered with hardware cloth right now while the seeds are germinating. & I use Repels-All. It mostly works, but they still get in there sometimes. I hate them. I don't know why they bother to come over here when the neighbors have seed out 24//7/365.
What kind of clematis? I have sweet summer, autumn, and double flowered varieties. I love them.

I’ve never saved nasturtium seeds but did buy and start some from seed this year.
No clue. It's purple is all I know. LOL

Keep us posted on the mini watermelon. 🍉

It's starting to get hot so I try to get most outside chores done in the morning. Garden beds are starting to produce. Sliced my first cucumber yesterday...lima beans and eggplant blooming.

Squirrels don't bother my gardens too much, but they stole some eggs last year. I didn't get any blue egg for a while last early summer and didn't think about it because my ameraucanas are seasonal layers. One day I went to check the chickens and heard a squirrel screaming and running away. I found a blue egg at the ground where the squirrel ran off. My black ameraucana girl, Pepsi, was mad! I guess she attacked the egg theft. That squirrel never came back again.

I was out watering the garden and new berry patch before the sun came up this morning. Out of the 16 currants I planted yesterday all look great except for one that's kind of wilted. I still have three replacement plants left, just in case.

Today I'll plant tomatoes and peppers, maybe some seeds too. I'll get the planting holes ready while the sun is hitting the garden. When the sun goes behind the trees this afternoon I'll put the plants into the ground.

I planted 6 bok choi in March, I think. Five were destroyed by cutworms, and I noticed that the last one is starting to bolt. Gonna have a salad today with bok choi, red kale, red leaf lettuce, parsley and chive blossoms, all from the garden.

ETA:

Watered the potted tomatoes, peppers, berries and chives. Need to up-pot lettuce and marigolds today.

The diakon-in-the-bucket project is going well. Seems like the plants are getting plenty of sunlight through the floating row cover that I put there to keep out root maggot flies.

My salad. Even threw in a few dandelion and wild lettuce leaves.

G’morning all. Been a busy week but I got out to water this morning and the xeriscape garden is happy! Plus the lemon tree is loaded with fruit and the bougainvillea is happy too. Elvis was my escort, called the girls over for bugs and such than ran from the water. Have a great day!

God bless you for caring! ❤️❤️❤️
I tell ya, the feelings can't even be put into words, my love for helpless or injured creature just overwhelms & immediately sidetracks me. Anything else on the day's agenda is put on hold & rescue takes precedence. It's ticked off many over my lifetime 😆.

I recall I was about 20, I had a few dates with a guy, who invited me to Thanksgiving dinner at his dad's & on my way I saw 2 horses running around...right into the roadway. I immediately pulled over & spoke softly to them, holding out my hand & rustling my other hand in my coat pocket, as if I had treats. I did have those Canadian mints, remember those...they were round & pink or white, looked like chalk but they were good mints. Anyway, the horses curiosity calmed them down & eventually they trotted over to me. My hands smelled like the mints. I gave each horse 1 mint & then they were glued to my side lol. I made my way slowly to the only house I figured they could be from...it had a large fenced area. When I started getting closer to the fence they ran off, snorting & kicking up their heels gleefully. What brats! They got out & were Not goin back in. I knocked on the door & asked if they had 2 horses...she looked out & saw the horses frolicking & headed towards the roadway again. So now it was me, the owner & her son trying to gather & persuade 2 horses back to where they belong. We got them back in, but needless to say, I was late for dinner.

I explained what happened, but his dad was ticked. He said some snide comments...like we were waiting to start dinner & you were out having fun. 🙄 There were many more smart ass comments, I can't even recall them now, but instead of making me feel bad, I lost respect for the man, especially later when he was trying to fix something & swore so foul-mouthed (Much Worse than when fire ants make me cuss). I saw the way he treated others...really nasty. I felt bad for his son but I also witnessed that bad temper at times in him.

The following week he came over as we were going to go see a movie, and he got ticked off that I needed 15 minutes to staple gun some polyethylene over the pigeon pens, since we had an approaching storm with sleet, ice & snow that would be blowing in about 2am. Well, now was the time to secure the pens, while it's still light & I can see what I'm stapling. I'm sorry, but getting to a movie 30 min early & where we sit, is Not as important as my feathered family. He was going off about it! I told him go see the movie alone & I broke up with the guy! Don't ever come between me and animals. Not ever. Because when it comes down to it, the critters will win!

Well, sorry for the long story. I got the sacroiliac shots & I'm on ice packs & rest. It is cold, rainy & windy here all day today. The garden is getting watered! That's a good thing. Indoors, I can separate my tomato seedlings & put into larger pots. They're doing great. I still have 3 Brussel sprout seedlings clinging to life...not sure about those.

Ok, have a great day!
