What did you do in the garden today?

All my ranunculus has died off. I bought them from Eden Brothers. Don't think I'll buy anymore.

Zinnias are blooming. Portulaca and dahlias are ALMOST blooming. I think the dahlias are taking over the memorial bed. The gladiolus and daylilies are buried under dahlia foliage.

And Japanese beetles are out in force. I'll need to take the bucket out tomorrow to start capturing them.

Bean towers are strung. Need to plant some more bean seeds.

Following the carrot video (posted by @Smokerbill i recall), I soaked carrot seeds in water for a few days. Today made cornstarch gel and mixed in the carrot seeds. Then, using a plastic bag, spread them in a trench. Usually one doesn’t soak seeds for days, so they may be dead. But, carrot seeds are notoriously hard to get going bc they really are sensitive to drying out, which this method helps to bypass. Anyway, here’s the last row before being covered with dirt. There are 5 rows, one row per variety.

If all the carrot seeds I planted take off, well, I’ll be in carrots thru 2025, I think.
@Acre4Me , have your cornstarch carrots germinated yet? I just gave it a try in my garden. I let the seeds soak in water for 4 days I think, and maybe, just maybe I could see a rootlet breaking out of one of the seeds. They were definitely swollen up from the soaking.

===========

I gave all my tomato plants a good pruning, taking off the lower leaves and suckers up to 6 or 8 inches from the ground. They are growing well this year, and I hope it keeps up.

I need to pick a lot of kale and red leaf lettuce today or tomorrow. They are growing like crazy!

A few pictures of the things growing around here. My lemon and lime are adjusting to life outside. The peppers and celery are still covered for now. Everything has wire over and around it to keep all the dumb cats from getting into it all. Severe weather chances tomorrow... I'm praying it doesn't get damaged.

What are you growing in the tires?

So sorry your DH hurt your back. Glad you didn't drown.
Me too, if he hadn't kept going backwards I would have been hurt much worse. I did lose the car keys in the lake when it happened, came out of my shallow lady trouser front pocket (we need real pockets), but the next day I made a telescoping magnet pole with one of those floor magnets, telescoping painters pole and hose clamps. DH was able to pull the keys up within 15 minutes.

Luckily someone gave me a ride in their golf cart to my property (I was soaked to the bone and it was a long ride😂) where I had my truck hitched to the boat trailer, with the keys in the camper, so I was able to pull the boat out of the water no problem. I knew my back was wrecked when it hurt me to turn and look at the trailer as I was backing down the launch ramp... At least I had another set of dry clothes, and another vehicle. 🤣

The pain appears to be mostly muscular so that's good. If I don't continue to improve I'll make a doctor's appointment to get an X-ray.
