We use fire now. LOL. DH has a flame thrower he uses. It works super well, just hit them with a little heat & it changes the cell structure of the plant & kills it roots & all.My husband asked me to buy some Roundup for weeds. I will find a better way to get rid of them than using a chemical that causes some severe illness. I'm thinking that maybe if I can get some really strong vinegar and drown them in it, win win for me.
Ugh! That's why I stopped growing rutabaga - the stupid cabbage moths. I'd like to grow broccoli or cauliflower but it just grosses me out so much. I was thinking next year in a GreenStalk & cover it from the instant I plant.Yesterday, I plucked 21cabbage moth caterpillars off my kale, then covered with netting. I need to check, this morning - to make sure there are none I missed. The small plants may die - but at this point, I'm viewing it as a learning experience. Never grew Kale before and want to see if I can defeat the little b******s and revive the plants
You can buy 40% vinegar and spray it on the weeds. It will kill all the weeds, although it doesn't last too long. I usually spray around my electrical fence 3 times per year.My husband asked me to buy some Roundup for weeds. You know - I should have known better! This is my 2nd year growing cabbage (in a raised garden), and they were covered, the day I put them in. The kale are in my greenstalk, up on my deck (I have 7 of them, now!) I know Kale is a brassica! I should've covered them on day one.Ugh! Capsaicin is in peppers but ya know they are probably using a pepper powder they can shake into whatever they make so who knows what that contains...preservatives no doubt. I do not get bad reactions when I chop up peppers for recipes, but I have had bad reactions to so called pepper powders or pepper sprinkles. When I was a kid we went to pizza shops & right there they have the condiments...you can sprinkle on top, the garlic powder, the peppers, oregano, etc. If I use fresh chopped peppers, oregano or basil, garlic, etc. No problem, but if I used any of the stuff in those shaker bottles I'd have a reaction & need Benedryl. I don't know how they processed stuff, but whatever they used, it sure as hell did not agree with me. Still doesn't. I had 1 slice of Giordano pizza at a friend's house about 15 yrs ago, made me so sick!I'm with you, I can't tolerate hot peppers. I started eating a chicken sandwich from a breakfast restaurant, and felt my throat close up before I even felt the burn. There was nothing in the description to indicate it was hot or Cajun. It has to be something in the peppers, because I can eat kimchee or horseradish.
Got honeysuckle, Peonies & the Magnolia tree bloomed with more flowers at once than I can ever recall. Smells amazing outside!Last week I dug up some weeds and spread around some grass seeds
Now the peonies are bloomingAs well as the honeysuckle tree, it smells really nice
I have a bunch I bought on amazon, but didn't have the guts to grow the brassicas this year so I haven't used them! I'm thinking maybe next year I'll have the stomach for it.You know - I should have known better! BTW, Sue ~ I'm going to message you a great mesh cover, sold on Amazon. Less expensive than those sold on GS
I wondered what happened to 100 red tulips I had planted on a huge gorgeous slope, with blue hydrangea in back of them...oh so lovely that 1st year...yes I saw "something" dug some up (squirrels I think) but the following years, the ones remaining would shoot up leaves, then nothing, no blooms. Each year there were less & less. I dug up what leaf shoots popped up last year & moved them to 1 smaller spot & fertilized the soil. I got 10 Tulip blooms this year. I guess they need more attention & nourishment? Not at all like Daffodils...man the Dafs are doing fantastic, even multiplied so I had to dig, separate & have more areas of them. Go figure. Tulips are pretty but I do not have that kind of time to be fooling with them, sorry Tulips, I leave you to the Garden Society, they plant a huge area for the town of Lewes every year. Now I know why...they just aren't so great at coming back reliably.I wish I could have tulips that would come back. In the past I planted some of the Darwin Hybrid tulips. They came back a couple years but got smaller until they disappeared.
We just do not have long cold spells to keep them going.
This past winter was not cold enough for my peonies. I only got about half the blooms I've had in the past.
Disappointing.
