What did you do in the garden today?

Sounds like a lot of you are getting the high temps we had last week. It was 100+ degrees here then. Now, we are getting temps in the 80's. Last night the low was 61 degrees. I am trying to figure out my new laptop. It's slow going for me

In my garden I planted some new sunflower seeds (yesterday). I've been battling the bugs that are trying to kill off my cucumber plants. Some of them are the cucumber beetle, but the other bug looks ghost like with spindly legs. It's sort of light greyish/white and likes to be on the underside of the leaves. I think it sucks all of the juice out of the leaves. I'm trying to battle them by picking them off and squishing them, but I may resort to a pesticide. I really want to get some cucumbers this year. I've also reseeded my kale, spinach & lettuces (again). Last time they had just barely started to come up when the high heat hit and killed them all. Also some critter is getting in my garden, in the middle of the day, and eating the insides out of some of my big somewhat ripe tomatoes I just finally started getting some nice tomatoes. I think I am going to pick the 2 pumpkins from the volunteer plants. They look ready to me. Also picked some cherry tomatoes. Green bean vines are climbing nicely, but no blooms on them yet.
ETA: also made hummingbird food and hung out 3 feeders. Saw a hummingbird already out there when I went to hang the first feeder!

Busy day.
Fed a bottle to the neighbor's calf again today. Mom might be showing a little weight gain...harder to see her ribs... which is a good thing.

Canned the elderberry juice that I dripped yesterday ...2 half gallon jars, 2 quart jars and a pint....that's just the first picking....unless the wild birds keep raiding the bushes in the garden.

I was notified that my 89 year old father had died in Kentucky so I spent time letting his friends and other family know. Dad chose to be cremated and wanted no service...his own form of closure. Parents divorced when I was 7. Mom died in 1990...she was only 60. He and his 4 children finally connected ten years ago. We were not close by his choosing. So sad because he missed out on a great family.

Spent time fixing lunch while hubby and his brother brought part of the herd home from our pasture in another town.
A different neighbor's young bull got in our back pasture with the young pairs. Our bull in that pasture is 2 X the size and flipped him. The boys tried to corral the young bull and get him thru a gate to the neighbor's property. Hubby was on the 4 wheeler, couldn't make a sharp turn and ended up in the barb wire fence. They did get the bull out and now this evening hubby is feeling the pain in his hip and cuts.

Watered more in the garden picking tomatoes and peppers and a gallon bucket of okra...the bees finally found the blooms in the dense foliage. The yellow squash is finished and the new plants are struggling. Something is eating the zucchini blooms...nice plants but no zukes. Same with the cucumbers. Time for the rat bait in cottage cheese containers again.

I have been wondering if there is enough time in the season left in Missouri to actually plant another couple of zucchini plants. I never have before. I would have to start from seeds, so probably not enough time, but maybe next year I will start some seeds in mid July.

So sorry about your dad. I still have not gotten over my Dads death. Hope your hubby feels better soon. He should probably apply ice where it's sore. Another reason we don't have cows. Hugs to both of you.

My hummers love my plumeria. Then they see the rest of the flowers on the patio and go nuts. Love watching them. Moved all my bird feeders away from the coop/run area earlier this season to help with biosecurity. We have so many nesting wrens nearby though, so dunno if it'll help.

Cukes, cukes, and more cukes! Nothing but green tomatoes on the plants today, so I made fried green tomatoes for dinner. Mmmmm. Saving the ripe ones for lunch tomorrow and another canning session. Got a few green beans off the new plants, more setting. I pulled the old ones and the biddies had such a good time pecking them apart. Spotted more baby cantaloupes. Got three really close to ready to pick.

Been replanting the cement flower urns on the front porch. The petunias and dianthus in them finally baked to death. I put portulaca, moss rose, verbena, lantana, and wormwood in them. We're getting a week of cooler weather, so

I've heard you can apply pesticides at night on your cucumbers when the flowers are closed and it won't hurt the bees. I haven't dared to do it though.

Had burgers on the grill last night and squash and zucchini. And candy, told the kids I eat the candy first, they said that's not candy that's gross. Gosh I love steamed swiss chard with butter, better than candy.
