What did you do in the garden today?

Busy morning. I got up at 6 AM since it was going to be in the upper 60s this morning! I got cukes and corn all cleared out. Added fresh compost and a little fertilizer. Planted pole beans and more corn. Got the shade cloth up over the tomatoes finally. Staked my 10 ft Sunflowers so they don't fall over in the wind. And watered the strawberry barrels.

I will need to do more watering later this evening. Hopefully Beryl brings me plenty of rain early next week! 🤞🙏

I watered everything in the garden except the tomatoes. I'll give them a drink in a day or two. Mid to high 90's the next 5 days. Tuesday's forecast, 98 degrees, and I'll bet a dozen eggs that it hits 100 or higher.

Still muggy here today, but I snuck out this morning for some errands and used the excuse that my single surviving sage seedling is still kind of shrimpy to buy a pretty variegated sage plant from a local garden store. That will hopefully go in the ground tomorrow before the heat moves in again. 🤞that at least one or the other does well!

Sorry you weren’t happy with the results. The batch I purchased was good. It took about 3 days before it was usable however, that’s less time than it takes to make a starter from scratch.
I am still using the San Francisco sour dough starter that I originally bought, and I haven't tried making one from scratch. I am happy with my purchase and the taste, but I think it would take the same amount of time to make one from scratch. I was using it after 7days, but it reached its peak at about 14 days.

At first, I was using a qt size mason jar, now I am down to a pint size mason jar. I add 1/3 cup of flour to 1/4 cup of water and use 1/2 cup of starter after it doubles. I proof it at 100F for 2 hours in my Breville oven. I always make sure I have some left over for the next day. I also keep an extra 1/4 cup starter dormant in my refrigerator and rotate it with the other jar daily.

You might want to consider backing off from baking to give your starter more time to develop and grow a bit larger. If you use up too fast it doesn’t have time to build up the “liquor” so it fully develops. Wait until you get the slightly amber colored fluid at the top of the flour mixture. Also, to get a tangier sourdough flavor, let your sponge develop for 16 to 24 hours before you make your dough.
