What did you do in the garden today?

A squirrel buried a walnut right under my Lavender, Again, so I carefully tried to remove it. Could not pull it out of there, as the top of the soil may have gotten rained on for 10 minutes, but deeper down that soil was solid & dry as it's been like a desert here the past month. We've really had no decent rain here since May...I think May, maybe April. Anyhow, I used the hose shooting water & my hand to untangle the roots, creating a deep mudhole. It took several minutes separating roots with my fingers, bent down, with my arm & end of hose shooting water, in the ground. I probably looked like a real sight lol. The top of the sapling was only maybe 6 inches tall but the roots reached down about a foot, intertwined with the Lavender roots. Well, when I finally got the dang thing out, I moved the muddy mess of soil back into place. I hope the Lavender does Ok, it's really a lovely shrub size & I'd hate to lose it. I don't know why that ornery squirrel Always picks this spot. There are literally acres to choose from dude! Leave the Lavender alone please!

you should prune lavender if it is big and you disturbed roots. it will come back fast. just water it regularly until it does.

Yesterday's super intense thunder ⛈️ Boomer lightning storm lasted 10 min, well the rain part was 10 min, the thunder was 20 min & LOUD, we had the rolling thunder, sounded like a big truck driving too fast down the gravel road hitting every pothole 😆 & we had the serious bolts of lightning 🌩 & crashing thunder like a cannon shot, freaking us all out. 😱
My neighbor & I were both outside in our veggie gardens at the time & we both heard a distinct sizzling sound accompany that 1st bolt strike...let me tell ya, we both never moved so fast! 🏃‍♀️ The bolt is one thing, but that sizzling sound...ooh, talk about your hair standing up on end! Her poor dog has been a nervous wreck already from nearby fireworks. She told me poor Buddy has not been a happy camper this week. 😢 Poor dog.
scary when it sizzels
or when the hairs start standing up from electricity in the air... I run then

Feeding the chickens was a struggle earlier. It was like a tropical rainforest. I was sweating so bad even after the rain started up again. It was hard to see with sweat running into my eyes. I was disappointed it was raining so hard because I wanted to check all of the gardens. Not happening. It’s currently 75F with 90% humidity. Ugh!
Sweat in the eyes, burning...hate that! I wear a cotton headband like the 80's style 😆 or tie a bandana around like 70's hippie. Hey, it works!

The 80's 😆 🤣 😂

Our UV index is very high. I got sunburn cutting the grass July 4th. The heat wiped me out, so I was too fried to do much else that day, other than water everything & tend to flock. We worked Friday. It was brutal, the heat & humidity. 🥵 It's been hard breathing with asthma, worse than other years. Well, I think we will finally get rain next week & a slight break from feeling like triple digits Temps. Hurricane Beryl may bring us rain Wed & Thurs. I don't care for wind, but won't be complaining about the rain, we need it badly.

Today...watering everything, of course.

This morning I decided to harvest all the remaining pea pods. With temps reaching the upper 90s the next few days I was a little concerned it would affect the quality of the peas.

I clipped off the vines at ground level, leaving the nitrogen-fixing roots in the ground. I plan to plant cucumbers right where the peas were growing.

Today the chickens will be picking on pea leaves while I'll be blanching and freezing peas.

ETA: I ended up with 4 one quart bags of pea pods in the freezer plus enough for me to munch on for the next day or two.
