What did you do in the garden today?

Beautiful day today.. Mid 80s. It was really hot in the sun though but in the shade with a breeze was incredible.

I decided to tackle my extremely overgrown hoop house. Here's BEFORE :

And AFTER: (still not complete. I'll finish tomorrow.)

I have some brassicas in there on one side. Keeping them alive through the hot summer so they can produce another crop in the fall. They are currently decimated from pests (grasshoppers, cabbage loopers, and Harlequin bugs). Gonna have to spray everything tonight with BT and Neem. The chickens got a treat of at least a dozen grasshoppers tonight... 😊

On the other side is mostly watermelon. I harvested one tonight... Probably have at least 2-3 others that are ready and quite a few more still growing.

I also harvested a bunch of aronia berries (choke berries). Haven't decided yet what to do with them...

You had a jungle in there! Looks good though.

As of yesterday my seeds are already starting to sprout. That's less than 48 hours. I'm amazed. Guess I will be investing in a heat mat or two for my January-March seed starting. The seeds are in my lean-to shed that's attached to the garage. So the swamp cooler has kept it around 76 during the day.

Yesterday it was 107 outside. I managed to get the spent corn stalks down, pulled out the watermelon vines, zucchini plants, and a few more tomato plants that are finished.

I marked out my future ground level bed space. It's a total of 30'x8'. I will be using the space for zucchini, pumpkins, and maybe melons next year. If I get it done in time, it'll host cabbage and brussel sprouts this year on one end and onions on the other.

I'm going to start coring & freezing tomatoes to make @WthrLadys tomato soup. They are piling up now, more that we can eat. & DH prefers the sungolds to snack on.

Found a broken pepper plant from Debby too.

Was going to make jam today, but I just don't have it in me.
Me either. Plus I figured we go through one whole half pint of jam/jelly a year here, and I'm low carb so it's a no for me anyway.
So I'll send the grapes to son who can jelly up and use for gifting at his office.
They already think he's amazing as he can cook and bake and do 'weird' stuff, and for an office of computer engineers, that's a compliment. LOL

Dark, cloudy, rainy, and only 60. Garden being naturally watered, for a change.
Morning 12 miles on the bike was drizzled out, so I cleaned out all the under the washer/dryer drawers and put them in their new spot.
Repairman is coming to work in the dryer timer knob on Wednesday. Sigh.
DS is at a WWII air show/walking tour and loving it. (Lives next to the airport.)
Niece has been moved into her first apartment, and has finished decorating and figuring out the bus system in her new town. PhD work starts Monday.
Nephew is, as we speaking, moving into his first dorm room, orientation week starts tomorrow.
Sister goes back to teaching tomorrow.
DH is prepping his classes for the fall term.
I've currently got a batch of sirloin in the freeze dryer, along with 3 trays for mirepoix powder. I go through the stuff like crazy, so why not?

It's all GO this time of year.

G’morning all. It’s muggy outside but the forecast is for less than 110 over the next week. I bet that changes. Hubs cut the grass this morning, I made bacon and duck egg salad for his lunch this week. I think Frank stepped in a hole in the grass when we played yesterday so we skipped the p a r k this morning. I pulled the weeds in the shade garden that I could, but I need to get the soil good and wet before I can get the rest out. They don’t have any leaves though, the chickens did a good job of that. Been hunting for duck eggs, can’t figure out where they’re laying again. So annoying. I need to coax them into the small yard so they start using nests but I need to finish raking in there first so they don’t hurt their feet.

I did a garden walk this morning. The grapes are still looking good, the pumpkins are stretching out. I did a little weeding around them. No pumpkin babies yet. I found a third butternut squash that looks like it will mature. I tied some of the SM tomatoes up and weeded a bit. I also put down Epsom salts and a little fertilizer on the squash and tomatoes. Then I picked enough basil leaves to make a nice batch of pesto. I’m making french bread to go with dinner tonight. French bread dough makes softer breadsticks than Italian bread.
