What did you do in the garden today?

So it doesn’t hold enough feed for the time you’ll be away? The only thing I’ve found that fits that bill for me is five gallon bucket feeders and waterers. Gravity feeders too, but the five gallon for water.
I don’t know if it works yet or not. I just got them. I chose that bc it holds like 12 gallons of water and the feeder is gravity fed holding 50 lbs. I have a smaller feeder that holds 20 lbs too. I got them long b4 our trip just to see if they work well. Don’t want my chickens to die!!
I hate plastics:( the metal ones I looked at had sharp edges I was sure they or I would be cut!
Just seeing if anyone else uses these and how you like them

I hate when mud gets under my fingernail. I bought a packet of rubber garden gloves from Walmart the other day.
Running nails down a bar of soap can help prevent that but I always forget & near every sink is liquid soap anyway. I do have a bar of soap in a cabinet but there it sits, pretty much just making the cabinet smell nice.

I would say you should be good then, if that’s enough to cover the time you’re gone. I hate plastic also, and the sun here kills it in a couple of years. I don’t use the metal for the same reason though. Let us know what you think about them.

That's what I used, bought some for the pigeons, too. I really like the 5 gal waterers, can bleach them easily, too. They may be pricey but they've lasted years. Much more durable than the initial galvanized waterers I tried, plus I can mix apple cider vinegar & not worry with the plastic. Can't do that with metal. I know we can make our own with a 5 gal bucket & spouts but I haven't tried that, yet anyway.

I use a five gallon bucket with quail cups. I have to replace anything plastic pretty regularly but I can keep using the cups for several years. Cheaper this way for me and I can often find uses for the broken buckets. Trim them a couple inches deep and they’re great for wet feed and small batches of electrolytes until they die completely.

Yes! Right now I have 2 1gal waterers that I refill 2x a day! 😑. I’m looking forward to a break from that at least- carrying back and forth. And now worried when, bent over, Of Cluck attacking!

I may be headed that direction bc the sun does same to ours too. This waterer is outside bc I couldn’t get the hose inside the coop. The feeders are going inside so maybe they will last longer

Temperatures in the 40's! I am 🥶 freezing! 😆 Got used to 100 degree days in the sun working. It is nice, I'm not complaining, I love crisp air, it is just quite an adjustment. Had to dig my jacket out. Chickens and pigeons are drinking a lot less water, but they are really chowing down on the feed, acting as if they are starving. I haven't had time to do a thing in my own garden, I've just been so darn busy with everything else. But this Saturday, other than a pigeon club meeting, I will be home, tending to my place because Lord knows it needs it.
