What did you do in the garden today?

Fred is good to his molting girls he won't mount those girls.
Morning gardeners very cool morning.
Wet and dreary today here.
My hen that he is with hides in the nest box all day and when she comes out to eat there is no egg. She has been laying around one egg every 2 days. My rooster jumps on her before she is allowed to eat.

Frequent breaks. Story time. On the trip home at a gas stop I got DW's electric scooter - wheelchair out for her. Near the front of the car. I started to get ready to fill up. Put the card in and pulled the card out. Stepped back and into DW. I let out scream. Never expected her to go in that tight space. She could have gone around the island. No car there. That is the first time in my 72 years of life that I ever screamed. She startled me that much.
That would have startled anyone 😯

It was sooooo hot and humid today. We spent a couple of hours making repairs to the goat house. The painted particle board walls the previous homeowner used were disintegrating along the ground and at the seams. So we pulled them all off and put up a treated plywood used for sheds.

Then I spent a few more hours cleaning coops. I was sooooo hot and filthy afterwards. I looked like I had a dark tan. It was just dirt... 😂

I had a nice scrub in the shower and now I don't want to pull my butt off the couch. So pooped....

We have been experiencing cooler than usual temperatures, so I have been trying to get yard and garden work done before the heat returns next week.

I dug rotted leaf compost into raised bed #3, then planted rutabagas, carrots (Danvers and Nantes Half-long), and Purple Top turnips:

Then I added mesh to discourage kitties.

I have another small roll of chicken wire, so I may create a fence around this bed as I did with bed #2. I just ran out of time today.

Did a little reorganizing in the hoop coop. Now the flock has more room and places to dig:

And last, I was given a roll of metal edging and installed it today around the day lilies:

Whew. I'm beat.

I am so tired. I got 5 hours of sleep last night. Somehow I still got up and worked out at 6am, and got my kiddo to school on time, with a full stomach. Then I went over to my best friends house. She's in Belgium for two weeks. I am taking care of her chickens in her absence. Today I went over there, let the chickens out, then I went and planted cucumbers and summer squash in her garden as a surprise for when she comes home.

Her garden has been kind of sad for the last few years. She almost didn't plant a summer garden this year, but I gave her some plants and kept the flame alive.

Something I noticed when I was in her garden.... there was not a single worm, bug, anything microbial in the soil. Just a mess of old roots, dry dead soil... It's sandy, but you can tell it has organics in it.... it wasn't compacted. I've never seen anything like it actually. She doesn't mulch. That's all I can think of. I'm going to do a simple soil test tomorrow to see what the pH is, at the least. I did bring fertilizer with me, and coco coir. I expected to use some of her compost.... but it's mostly her native soil in there. Totally compacted and devoid of .... I'm going to call it "Love". there was a good smell to it, but the texture was so wrong, it felt dead.

Anyway, I did what I could there. Then I came home and planted my cucumbers, harvested a TON of tomatillos, and jalapenos. I pulled out a bunch of the tomatillo plants. The soil under them was full of life, full of worms, decomposing organics. It was comforting.

I finally made myself a 3x3 composting cube. I wasn't able to finish filling it before dinner time. Tomorrow I will finish it!

I've taken over 14k steps today. I think I'll sleep good tonight! Sunburn is kicking my butt though.
What a lovely read. You are a hero!
