What did you do in the garden today?

4 when I got up. Snow Wednesday and then near zero lows for a few days. Still winter for 39 more days. All this talk about dandelions. Can't you taste the bitter? Bitter is a deal breaker for me. I know it is genetic if you can or cannot taste bitter.

I was one of few kids who loved spinach and lettuce with dandelion leaves salad.

We had a feral cat problem in a duplex we rented years ago, so not a garden problem. We did the following and quickly they left our area alone.

1. Vinegar, poured on the foundation. They were using one area as a toilet, and spraying in one area. Yuk and stinky bc the smell was beginning to invade the basement. Cats do not like vinegar smell (per info we found on internet search “how to deter cats).

2. Remove all toilet areas, including top dirt around the areas.

3. Add mothballs under things (like bushes) where they want to hang out. Or any place you want to keep them away from. Some people say “OMG you’ll kill them with mothballs” but they avoid them, they don’t eat them. I think those people have never dealt with a cat problem or are anosmic (lacking sense of smell). I can attest that no cats died…they were all still alive and reproducing, just no longer affecting my little area.

My neighbors cat comes to my garden and buries a turd every once in awhile, so we shoo her away and scare her off when she’s in our yard/garden. We don't mind her, but we do mind her poops. Luckily she’s a huntress and stays in the farm field a lot, or at her barn, so not a constant issue. He now has 4 cats …. The huntress, a scaredy-cat that stays close to the barn, and now 2 kittens, so we may have more problems this year.

Wow, this looks wonderful. I love that stonework!
I'll be sure to let hubby know. He did it all by himself and really outdid himself <3

G’morning gardeners. It’s sunny and cool here with an expected high of 70. The school my granddaughter attends was flooded by a waterline so I have a surprise guest today. I’m just checking to see if the beds need water or not and that’s it outside for me. We might can some meat, but I was going to teach her to make bread and let her take the loaf home to her family. Enjoy your day everyone!

Set up the winter room in the barn for the alpacas. Chills of -30F and temps tomorrow night (without the wind) of -5 to -17F. Snow coming tonight as well, so if I can get them in tonight, I'll shut them in. Mostly so the snow doesn't blow in too. They I'll let them roam after the snow is done.
They usually emerge on day after a snow and look at me like "what the HELL, Ethyl?! Who ordered the snow?" And then mumble off and start a spitting war with each other.

So my next week is catering to those divas in the cold and cooking warm peas and apples for the hens.

Check please.

Good afternoon gardeners. I found some heirloom seeds on Amazon for 2 more varieties of lettuce and lacinato kale. I still have curly kale seeds and hope to plant those as well. My first try at a Fall garden went well for salad greens. I want to try the Brussel sprouts again but will need to start them inside. Finally running out of carrots as well. I won’t be starting anything indoors for a while. I’m just hoping for a chance to prune the apple trees and put down some pellet stove ash on them and the peach tree.
