What did you do in the garden today?

Some of my strawberry seeds have sprouted! šŸŽ‰

Oh... And I think I'm going to get chicks this spring since a lot of my flock is getting older. I'm going to incubate some eggs from my own flock but also picking up some from the feed store. I picked up their chick schedule to align my incubator cycle with the date the breeds I want are in.
Nice! 🐣 If you don’t mind sharing, what breeds?

Black Copper Marans, Rhode Island Reds, and Cream Legbar are the 3 breeds they will have that day. I'd prefer Blue Birchen Marans (I currently have 1) but I'll settle for BCM instead. I have a couple RIR and CL currently but they are all between 3 - 6 yrs old.

From my own flock, I have a bevy of breeds and egg colors to choose from... My roosters are all purebred but my hens are both purebred/mixed breed. Mostly I'm interested in heavy breeds who are also productive layers.

I want more brahmas.
When I moved them to the shop this weekend for the Arctic chill, I had to remind myself to lift with my legs. OMG, they are HUGE!

I'm building a temporary coop/run in the heated shop today and moving the flock in there tonight.
Our temps are only going to make it from 0-5'F for HIGHS every day for the next week, PLUS it will be damp. Nights will be deep into the negative numbers. At least the shop is at 40-45'.
I just can't sleep knowing they're out in their run and coop working so hard to stay warm.
My girls are getting older and it's really hard on them when it's for more than a few days. This will be week TWO of this Arctic crap.
I live in Nebraska also and we brought ours into our garage. It stays only about 25-30 degrees in there but much better than what's happening outside! It's awful. And the wind we've had lately.

This is weather is ridiculous.
Where ya at?

My girls are getting old and I worry what I will do when that time comes. what method do you use to cull a hen like the Buff for example? Thank you. Tough topic but i need a plan. :hugs
There was a post on here where they used ether. (Starter fluid)! It looked like they just fall asleep. My husband got all the necessary items. You can put it on a tag hold them and cover their nares. Or put soaked rags with it in tote place bird in and they fall asleep. Permanently. I haven't done this but wanted to be ready when the time comes. I had a sweet girl I thought would go eventually and didn't want her to suffer. She ended up dying in my arms two weeks ago peacefully and unexpectedly at that time. You maybe can look up "ether" in search bar?

Boy- your egg basket is gorrrrgeous!!

I’m sorry you lost a couple, that’s always a bummer. I have four of these, they are Arabian lilacs and do quite well here. Fast growing and the one I trimmed back really hard is over six feet tall. Or at least it was.

I see. I don't know if we have arabian lilacs here.
