What did you do in the garden today?

Any of you grow Cushaw Squash? I have some of my mom's seeds which are marked from 2021. I tossed some in seed starting mix and at least one actually germinated... I've never grown Cushaw before. I've read that it's a climber and big. If I put it on a vertical trellis, should I make slings to support the fruit? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect....

Yet another thing that I've got to find space for.... 🤔

I tried pure coir on my onion seeds
Is there anything special to growing onions from seed? Yes, I know the seeds lose viability quickly.

One pot is purchased seed, and is two years old. The other is my own seed, saved from my onions. Neither have sprouted. The peppers are up, but not the onions. Bottom heat, 16 hours under the grow light.

I'm thinking I'll give up on them and plant some tomato seeds in those pots instead.

And then they'll sprout, right? :gig

Wow, there are so many varieties of squash (what we call pumpkins regardless of variety lol)! My butternut started climbing up the shed but it soon figured out there was nothing to grab hold of and is happily crawling along the ground.

Yep, Every year since 2007. :) if you let it hang OH ya. it MUST be supported. My largest one was 3 feet long and 12 inches ACROSS at the bulbous end.
DELICIOUS it was.

I think it can take a couple of weeks for onions to germinate, and the ideal temp for germination is around 65-75 degrees. The seeds I started this year did well, but I should've planted them a month or more earlier, like in December.

I did no heat (although everything is inside so not terribly cold to begin with) and only 8 hours of light to avoid messing up their photosensitivity (in case I’m using the wrong word - I mean keeping the ‘day’ short so they don’t get the trigger to stop getting bigger and start dying back, although I’m doing bunching onions so I’m not sure if it matters - all the YouTube videos seem to focus on bulbing onions, I just figure it probably won’t hurt). If yours haven’t sprouted at all I doubt the light is the problem though.

I will note I went out and bought brand new seeds this year, as my previous luck with onions was terrible and I wanted to cut down on variables of things that could go wrong.

That’s how it always goes! 🤣 I used some old potting soil in the Calypso bean pot that was old and everything in it was dead and ended up with volunteers - no idea what they are!

Hmmmm. Now it's possibly too late to grow them from seeds. So good thing I got some sets.
You might as well try some in the garden if they germinate. The ones I planted in January were only around 1/16" in diameter when I put them in the garden a couple weeks ago. They grew really slowly indoors. I don't know if that's typical. They did have long roots.
