What did you do in the garden today?

I made a dumb mistake today... I was sowing a bunch of seed packets in various beds and just sort of in my own little world. After I was finished, I belated realized I had sown some Hollyhock seeds in the raised memorial bed where the dahlias and gladiolus didn't really grow back. This bed is already 30" off the ground.

I was reading your post, and I felt mighty dumb myself because I had no idea what you were talking about. I understand vegetables, but not flowers.

Hollyhocks can be 6 ft - 8 ft tall...

OK. I see the problem now. I still could not tell you what a Hollyhock, dahlias, or gladiolus are, but at least I can understand too tall!

Some of my best discoveries are things I had not planned. Maybe it will turn out better than expected.

Well, I certainly hope it works out well for you! I hope to read about your results later on.

I, on the other hand, have had a life full of experiments. I just started gardening more seriously a few years ago, so I am still learning new stuff every year in that area.

Sometimes I try something new, fully expecting it to work, and it might fail miserably. Dear Wife might question me about it, and I just calmly reply, "It was just an experiment." I don't think she believes me...

3 years of extreme drought, and if I see one more car wash opening up in the city I'm going to scream!

Does it not seem like they are in every.single.corner.??!!! Ridiculous. People complain about the price of eggs but spends so much at those !

Experiment is with habanero peppers. I added some more types of ways to experiment. I have plain soil, soil w/egg shells, soil w/coffee grounds, soil w/egg shells and coffee grounds, soil in egg shells w/coffee grounds and soil in egg shells. I'm going to run this to May 8th and see how it goes. This is the first time I have ever done an experiment with anything.

I love to so these kind of experiments. Let us know how it turns out. I keep a garden journal and it for things like this. I'm surprised all the time when I look back and see it!

Lincoln is trying to secure a location for ANOTHER well to supply the city. Waverly is on water restrictions, and I know Gretna just put in that water play park. It's crazy. The Platte disappears in the summer to nothing, and the ground water is taking a beating with all the pivots.

I hadn't really thought about these car washes popping up until reading the posts here yesterday. Then on my way home from town yest I spotted a sign offering car washes started from $30. Most everyone in this area has a house with a yard. Surely it's cheaper doing it with your own hose and bucket.

I feel good about these double layered wicking buckets; I mixed in 1/2 cup of lime and made a ring around the top with 1/2 cup of Garden Tone like an earth box. I found that the bungee cord that I use for my tarps fit perfectly around my buckets and can hold the plastic cover in place. The plastic cover will help retain moisture and prevent my fertilizer from washing out when it rains. I made a mound, so the rainwater runs off the sides. I will plant my Marconi Sweet Peppers in these buckets.

I used something similar to the hole maker in the picture below to make a hole for my hardened cucumber plants. I cut a crisscross slit in the middle of the plastic cover of my wicking buckets and made a perfect round hole in the potting mix with my rusty hole maker. I always had it, but never had use for it until today. I duct taped the plastic slits to waterproof it. I am too lazy to take a picture of my rusty hole maker.

Are you using pots or planting in a bed? Egg shells won't break down unless you prepare them with vinegar. There are lots of YouTube videos on this. Spent coffee grounds are a good source of nitrogen, but straight out of the can coffee is too strong. Also, potting soil or plain soil from the garden will underperform in containers.
