What did you do in the garden today?

Exactly like this lady shows (at about 2 minutes in), it's what's in the manual to do. The chooks got it pretty much straight away. The lid "clanks" a bit when they step off. They just needed to get used to that noise. I pretty much just did what the lady does, put the feed out on treadle part and on the yellow strip (at about 5.30mins). The minute they step up, they've got an open hopper. (she's weighted hers open - I didn't do that at all, I just hung around and encouraged the girls to get up there. They quickly got used to the clanking sound. I put it in, and they were using it straight away/when I checked the next morning they'd got it.)
Thanks so much for posting the video - it looks easy enough. I wonder if my chickens would figure it out. It sure would be nice not to worry about birds & rodents eating lots of the chickens' feed. Tired of wasting money feeding pests.

My chickens, as lovable as they are, aren't the "brightest", and they "got it" pretty much straight away. The only thing to be overcome is that noise, it freaked out some of the girls more than others, but they overcame it pretty quickly. When one of the "braver" girls opened the treadle, they'd hop up too. It didn't take long before they all just ignored the noise and went for the dinner. Hunger/greed/feeding instinct is a pretty good motivator. I just hung around and gave them some lessons, told them the noise wasn't scary, blah blah, they learnt pretty quickly. I didn't give them options, other feeders, if they wanted their crumble, that's where it was.

Got some great deals on garden stuff at the dollar store today. 25% off, then 50% off that. I got a starter tray with the little plastic planters that hold like 6 plants each and some multicelled pots that biodegrade. I got a pair of garden gloves for 25 cents! And free pallets to make a compost bin out of at Harbor Freight. I wish it was sunny out now, i would love to go out and work!

also I could kick my self. H D had nice heavy duty prob, 5 to 8 gallon, totes for like $3.97 ( I guess an instore special),Wednesday. Black bottoms with yellow

http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-5-Gal-Heavy-Duty-Storage-Tote-HD5G-1PK/300676888lids.
.would have been lots for surface area than 5 gallon buckets..
would have made great containers for growing various veggies etc....duh me..
....I was so miffed off, about returning an item and picking up an item ordered(wrong item,sent... long drive to store for nothing)I went there for>>>
that I forgot to go back and buy from that section..of the store...

I bought one at Lowes when they were $10 because the top hooks on well and we have to take our garbage to the dumpsters. I hate when stuff blows out of the back of the truck! I need more!

yeah you bought the larger TOTES...
Bigger totes are hard to move when full of "soil"'
I bought several HF plastic furniture dollies and have several Rubbermaid garbage can dollies for my heavy 25 gallon plastic growing pots....2 used ones were gifts from a relative
Going to buy several more(hopefully a friend will bring down next week) 2 more new HF dollies....so I can move around my big pots...
so this years produce is costing more to grow...
Because I thought we would have already moved out of here
what has done the best so far in my MANY MANY plastic pots are.... GREEN PEPPERS.. My reasoning is that they dont like wet feet... containers dry out fast even under hail netting...
But would feel better if all my growing containers were wooden.....be fabulous to have oak barrels...
...instead of plastic.....
I try to line most containers with burlap bags.....I used big sized light or white t shirts on the outside,,, to try to dispel the black...
If I started earlier would have collected more old t shirts to use inside each pot when ran out of feed bags...
Curious to see how my SP turn out this year....in containers....
