What did you do in the garden today?

I planned to work in the garden today. Put the chicks in a storage bin and started driving the Mule up to the chicken tractor. I RAN OVER MY OWN DOG! I could not believe the whole thing. Poor dog, there was blood dripping out his nose and he was limping. At 14, i figured we should just put him down but husband said wait and see how he does. The dog hid under the porch and then the shed. He came out and i went and carefully picked him up and brought him in and wrapped him up. He slept a lot. I am worried that he has not eaten or drank anything but he is still with us. He has a lot of health issues, and i was considering having him put down. So i was not going to spend a fortune at the vet. He is 14 years old. I feel awful about the whole thing.

So sorry. I fear that will happen to my dog some day. she's such a knuckle head, and has no fear of moving vehicles.

Today, I made a batch of salsa. Enough tomatoes left from that first picking to make an other batch. Buried 2 mice. One of them was so big, I had to check to be sure it was not a rat.

Dilly beans or apple sauce tomorrow.

Probably not going to get much done in the garden tomorrow but i can hope. Getting the cat spayed. Going to the bank etc. I do not know how long the cat will be there. It was supposed to rain tomorrow but you never know. I really want to plant more veggies. Some critter ate half of a cherry tomato, no idea what did that. I am starting to think i may have to enclose the whole garden in hardware cloth! I really want a trail camera.

I have heard that you can place unripe squash in a warm spot in the sun, and they will still ripen, even though off the vine. I've never done it before, but am going to give it a try because this squash looks like it would be REALLY GOOD once ripe!

We raise Butternut squash every year. 19 on the vines now. They keep well into winter and you can ripen them by putting them on a windowsill or table that gets some amount of sun or bright daylight. Rotate them periodically. They stay rock hard until you cook them.
