What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday during the heat of the day about 52 and sunny. I sat outside at the picnic table and cracked walnuts. Radio and dog for company. Pleasant. I love being outside on sunny days. I have about a gallon of nut meats so far. Walnut pie for Thanksgiving. Nuts for baked goods all year.

I mostly get cat photos but here is a fox in day time.

Those sunny days are about to become few and far apart. Enjoy every one while you can. Wish I could do that. I sit outside for just a few minutes and I see all the things that I need to do, and I'm up and running again.

It wasn't as though I could catch them by the tail at will. I actually think the ones I was able to catch were under the influence of the bait --- I'm not the Flash.
As for the onions I didn't even try. I chose to have a singular battle with the beets as opposed to fighting multiple fronts, and that battle was a draw. But it's nice to know, a warm fuzzy feeling, that the Onion Whisperer remembered my plight and asked me how it was going.
Beets! I recall discussing improving beets for the season. What changes did you make?

I didn't plant beets this spring or summer. Took a break to focus on the strawberries I got.

The beets I started a few weeks ago are coming on pretty well. They will do better now that I laid tomato cages over the beds to keep the neighbors cat from digging them up to go potty.... I would shoo it away from the yard completely if I had no rats or mice. I let it stick around in hopes that it's being useful and catching vermin. It's very tempting to trap it though.

in september I transplanted beet starts (as well as lettuce, cauliflowers and purple carrot) and all are fine. after a few cooler nights nice weather is back. no heating needed. hopefully beans will mature and I will get some seeds. they are precious as I could not find them any more. my mother friend's (RIP) MIL gave us those seeds at least 20 years ago. one of the best heritage beans meant to eat green. they are flat, about 5 in long and tasty.

Let’s see, I took pains to make sure the pH was above 6, changed the variety, fertilized with a general purpose fertilizer prior to planting, painstakingly space the seeds to limit the need to thin, succession planted, and thinned as needed. Still, although I do get a harvest, the beets tend to be both small in size and harvest. I’ll plant anywhere from 40 to 50 row feet and get about enough harvest for roughly six or seven pint jars of processed beets. I fight them every single year.

Put orange peels in the garden bed in question? Cats don’t like the smell.
