What did you do in the garden today?

Hosspak... you have left me ALMOST speechless... Is this a complaint from the man living in the land of perpetual sunshine? Am I hearing a complaint that you have perhaps been indulging in too much gardening? No such worries about that here. Still snow on the ground, though my deeply mulched garden has been frost free, bare, and ready for planting for 2 weeks. The soil is blacker than ever under that mulch. You have my deepest sympathies regarding your head cold... and to have a back ache on top of it. I do hope the back ache is from over exertion, and not from a back injury.

But, I did have an order of trees delivered yesterday: 2 shrub cherries, 2 Siberian pea tree shrubs, 2 elderberries, and an apricot. They were all potted up b/c we're having trees harvested from our property this spring, and I don't want to plant them until I see what the lot looks like after the guy gets done tearing it up. Oh how I wish I had a chipper, and a big tractor with all of the big boy attachments.

Lazy gardener method works great, I start with heavy layer of cardboard first then add my layers of mulch. Only thing I don't like about the method is cooler weather snakes use it stay warm.

I like my snakes, and am happy to see them! Unfortunately, they are not very plentiful lately. There was one summer when we had a lot of them. They'd crawl up in the vinyl siding of my house, and I'd see them peeking out from under the siding at me. A bit disconcerting at first, but then, I enjoyed looking for them. However, we don't have any poisonous snakes here. Mostly garter snakes, the occasional brown and red water snake, occasional green, brown and black ones. We have an interesting tree toad that grows about 2" long, and likes to move into bird houses. It's interesting to look up and see a toad staring out over his kingdom from the hole of a bird house.
