What did you do in the garden today?

I have a plastic sheeting "cap" on the roof of my coop for just that purpose...to prevent sheering/wear on any tarps that are applied. I also made sure that my hoops were turned in such a manner than the long wires were facing upward, so no rough points or edges on the outside of the hoop, just on the inside. Then I zip tie it down tightly, so there's never any flapping at all. I think it helps also that I have those little porch roofs jutting out on either end that sort of protect my end caps somewhat, so the wind really can't get up under the edges of the tarp.

Parted out my leaf stores today and emptied several bags around the apple trees, inside little deer netting pens. Didn't have enough netting and stakes for each tree, so had to do every other tree. Will finish up tomorrow.

Then to empty all those other bags out on the garden and get to work smoothing out all those humps. Will take pics of both areas tomorrow.

Looks like there are going to be some very fine gardens out there after seeing all the mulch people have been gathering up.

The dear wife and I have gathered about four pickup loads of leaves and pine straw so far and the onions are mulched and we have started on our small kale and collard plants. We have also been working in the greenhouse and I have some roses, some crepe myrtle, hibiscus, ice plant, fig trees , and other things started. The figs, roses, and crepe myrtle are from cuttings.

Nice! I love ice plant. Not perennial here. My green house has that heavy clay subsoil since we moved it off the garden. Hopefully, it's in a "permanent" location, but the soil will be a work in progress. First step is to turn the girls loose in it with about 2' of leaves this winter. Then, in the spring, I'll work on building up some soil. It's a hoop house, 8 x 8 with 6' peak. About 4 years old, so the 2 x 4 bottom rails are showing some rot. Plan will be to get it reinforced in place with rebar, and do only what I have to do to keep the panels from breaking through the frame. Eventually, it will need a rebuild. Will have 2 growing beds going the length of it.

I managed to get the leaves raked from the yard....into the garden.

And I'm outside in shorts and T shirt, working up a sweat in the leaves.

Normally we would have seen our first snow by now...very unseasonably warm weather we are having and I'm LOVING it!!! Saves on firewood and I'm getting a lot done. Win/win.

Got one more fence/pen to build, around the peach trees, then will give them a foot of leaves as well. Then I'll be working on smoothing out the leaves in the garden so they aren't so bunchy and uneven and also will be hauling the last of the wood chip pile and placing it on the garden and flower beds. Then will reseed that spot where it's been sitting since this summer.

That's great Bee! We don't get that much snow do I absolutely love it when it happens.

It's mostly gone now, so later I'll try to cover the strip where I ran out of cardboard with the new feed sacks I emptied yesterday.

Well I guess I'm now a leaf collector. I drove around for 2 days collecting bags of leaves to use on the fruit trees and in the garden, Going to get them all emptied out tomorrow as we are expecting a lot of rain soon.! And so far no surprises!(as in doggie poop) the girls love scratching around in them too!

Thanks for all the knowledge you guys share on this site!

You all are on a tear with layering your gardens!!! On the week end, someone here advertised bagged leaves available for giveaway. I left a message, but must have been too late for it, as they haven't responded. We had a glorious Indian summer here too, and then--BOOM--snow and high winds, So I'm not sure anything else will get done out there. It's below freezing a lot of the time, and the roads are icy. I guess the next last thing I want to do is blend the grass seed and sprinkle it over the snow. Other than that, I'll just admire your projects. Happy Thanksgiving!!! We are blessed!
