What did you do in the garden today?

I think I will cover the thornless blackberry vines with mulch today . Said to be for zone 5 but get winter damage most years if not covered .

Does the mulch help with that or does it just lessen the damage? I've been thinking about getting thornless blackberries but don't want to have to baby them along each winter.

Should help lessen the damage . These are Tripple Crown . Died to the snow line last year . Also have Kiowa and a thornless that was supposed to be a raspberry . So no idea what variety it is . I have had black satin in the past . None of these are reliable in zone 5 without protection . This is my first try at insulating them . I also planted a thornless Boysenberry this year . It will need protection .

I'm doing a deep mulch style gardening here, so am thinking it may help mine survive the increasingly harsh Jan/Feb temps were are having here. Was also thinking of planting them under the dwarf apple trees for added protection, as they have a mulch layer also.

Thanks Phil. I got a letter from my boss today, asking that I be excused from JD. But, I think I'll just bite the bullet and serve my time. Otherwise, they'll keep calling me back every 6 months until they get me. If I do the time, they can't harass me for an other 5 years.

Bee, what planting zone are you in? IMO the thorned berries are hardier. I have purple and yellow raspberries that are indestructible. Of course you'll mulch them anyways. But if the canes die back to the ground, you've lost the year's crop. Something to check is if they fruit on new or second year canes. If they fruit on new canes, theoretically, they could die back every year, and you'd still get a fall crop.

It's a done deal. All day process. They had 6 trials to select for. Completed selection for 4 of them. Evidently the last 2 will be continued till next session. I consider myself lucky to not have been chosen. All assault cases.

Good to hear, LG. I've not had to serve so far either. I've seen jury selection, and it's a long day.
