What did you do in the garden today?

Isn't it just wonderful to finally be working the garden after a long winter?

I've got so many things to plant next week but I'll have to fit planting in around the thunderstorms. The best part? I don't have to till!!!!!

Raked up a lot of leaves onto my tater rows, then removed 5 cart loads of leaves off the garden and placed them on the orchard. I could have removed far more but I started noticing that the leaves under the top layer are mulching down well and the chip layer is right under those, so I don't want to remove too much and be regretting it later on this summer.

Once I turn the worms into that garden tonight and the spring rains and warmth hit, I expect a lot more composting action in that garden. Will try to plant some onion seed tonight if I get time and do more of the same on Monday, along with garlic and asparagus.

I'm going to use those little fluorescent flags as my row markers this year...they are tall, easily noticeable, easily moved and pushed into this thick mulch layer and I can write on the flags with marker. They've done a great job of marking the tater rows this winter through all the leaf shifts and depositing of material, getting run over by the mower, etc.

Now...to get to that coop tweak....

It's balmy, breezy and overcast today...perfect day for working!

Okay, I am so jealous right now! I am looking at snow covering the 50X65 foot garden my husband cleared last fall. Fence posts waiting for fencing, raised beds ready to be built. I've been sipping my coffee, looking out the window and dreaming. We won't be planting here outside until the last weekend in May. Lucky you:)

The only things I'm planting right now are all cold hardy crops...we won't be planting the main crops until the middle of May here. We've had snows in April and frosts in May, so we don't put out anything that isn't frost hardy until then.

But...we no longer have snow right now. Just rain.

We've had an early spring here! Last year at this time we had 2 ft of snow on the ground.

Well I just came off the ice from ice fishing...we still have two feet of snow.....but it's going fast.....spring has sprung.....but we won't be planting for a while it takes forever for the soil to warm up....and we get frost into June...

We still have about a month before we are frost free but the days are warm right now and the nights are in the fifties. But we usually get one more frost in April.

It's been beautiful here all week and I am longing to start planting in the garden (but I know the weather most likely won't hold!) I've been checking daily when I take the dog out and my garlic is about 4 inches tall already. It grew through December with all the crazy weather. Surprisingly I have two small lettuce plants that over wintered and are growing!

I have broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, peppers and eggplant under the lights now - still waiting for eggplant and some of the older pepper seed to germinate; they might be a lost cause. I'm going to sow tomatoes and some herb seeds this weekend and get them going. Next weekend we are planning to assemble two more 4x4 and one 4x8 raised beds, cut and burn last year's asparagus and maybe I'll tempt fate and sow some pea seeds and onion sets

I am planting some cold hardy stuff and waiting for it to show me spring is really here before I plant the rest. I have some seeds started and waiting on more.
Went to Lowe's today and bought even more to plant. lol DH picked some of his fav's and picked up some more soil.

We moved from Northern North Dakota to Central California last May. I was pregnant and hated the heat with a passion all of last year! However now I have a beautiful garden up and sprouted and I am loving it! It rained today so I only got a quick peak but we have beets, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, zucchini, bell peppers, strawberries, and 2 early girl tomatoes. Oh and all my California family members told me it was too cold to plant in February. California in February = North Dakota in May or June!
