What did you do in the garden today?

The rats chewed the Romex electrical wiring in our pole barn. If we did not have a gfci system, it would have burned down. They carried more than a 50# bag worth of pig pellets from the pig trofts up into a box stored on the rafters. The weight of the box filled of feed broke open a roof truss and sagged the roof. We thought it was rotten wood or termites until we went to fix the calapse and it rained down all of the swine pellets like a hail storm.
They chewed some of my chickens feet while they were sleeping, I caught them in the act .
We are at war with the giant rodents. The rain chased them to our dry spots I assume.

Rats are awful varmints! I had a metal trash can for some of the feed, but we had 100 goats, 300 chickens and 40 rabbits. I really wanted to keep the feed in old freezers if i would have had room to. I would rather have mice than rats, but neither is any fun. What a nightmare for you. Have you tried an army of barn cats, or maybe rat terriers?

Rats are my beast of burden lately. On a more positive note. My dying tom plants yielded about 30 or so good tomatoes. I am going to reduce them down and render my famous tomato sause. Famous with hubby anyway. The Basil and garlic survived the H2O overdose so the annual tom sauce is not effected by bad weather. Yahoo says my taste buds!

I was heart broken when our cats slowly aged and left to a better place (I hope). We have 1 Left and he is not allowed outside anymore. I would truly be lost without him. He if 15 human years old. He is a family member. He is unreplaceable. Sucks being an animal lover sometimes. Momas baby but an old man cat. I sound pathetic but his rat chasing days are over.

the question was, what did you do in the garden today ??
It has rained so much here that I have not even looked at the garden for almost a week.
However, today after our daily rain,
I mixed up a batch of fish fertilizer and squirted all the tomato plants.
I have one 190 ft row and a 30 ft row. about 75 plants in all. 56 of them are Roma's..
Then I hand weeded 10 rows of onions.. Oh,,,,those rows are 2 feet long.. in a box.

this is the first time I am trying the fish fertilizer.. I also have some slow release kelp pellets.
they are more for getting the garden ready for planting.
I made a hiller/bedder for my tractor. I have a whole bunch of strawberry runners to plant.
I will make a raised bed, cover it with landscape cloth and poke holes in the cloth for the berries.

today I drove along the local roads and spotted several nice elderberry bushes. I want to take cutting from some of them and start a nice patch on my property. I have a good start along the road, but I am afraid the town might come along and mow them down..

I am looking forward to real garden tomatoes after eating those awful plastic things the grocery store sells that look like tomatoes!
Supermarkets have hybrid toms with no flavor. I try to grow heirloom traditional toms. Man altering nature for big production robs the flavor.
Grill cheese sandwiches cooked with a thin slice of tomato.. OMG... Complement it with a home made pickle spear.. I am hungry now.

:)I use neptunes harvest fish fertilizer ... we live near the family who makes it ( not important but ...thats why I gave it a go )

Anyways my flowers and herbs enjoy it-- not to much I leaned the hard way and killed my spring sprouts :th

I also noticed after using the diluted neptunes harvest ( as directed) the flies are REDICULOUS... So I guess beware of that issue.. happy fertilizing :)

I have a neighbor who has pools of tilapia fish. He pumps the water up hill into his plant beds and they filter the water and the water is reclaimed back to the pools. Fish water fertilization is really working for him.
Amazing results! Good for you..awesome

Had my first tomato yesterday and even though it was a little early to pick it still tasted better than the above mentioned plastic things.
