What did you do in the garden today?

I help a butterfly dry out in the morning sun from last night's downpour.

Ok, if you plant your sunflower seeds, I'll plant mine! I keep thinking that it is already to late in the season to plant them. However, if you plant yours, I'll plant mine and we can have a friendly competition to see how they do!!

I planked 4 raspberry canes this year. 2 of them had green on them and seemed to be growing until I planted them :barnie then they turned brown and appear to have died. The other 2 never got any green on them. I am hoping they aren't really dead and next year will show some growth. :fl

Can you post pictures of your raised beds and tell me what the pros and cons are? My husband wants me to switch to raised beds, but I am reluctant.

All I did in the garden today was water it and pick off some Japanese beetles, then I went to Eckert's to pick peaches and then to Forest Park to Fair Saint Louis. Now my feet hurt!
If i can figure out how to do it, i would be glad to post pics of my raised beds. They are just rectangles made of 2×10 or 2x8 , whatever we had plus some i bought. Glad to plant sunflowers with you! I will get some in tomorrow, since i did manage to hack a trench in the soil. Sometimes i have to hose it down to get the shovel in! But since it is hot and i am a grandma, i move at a slow pace. It may be weeks before i get them in all around the garden. Of course, i am expecting keets to be shipped on the 11th, and i need to build a coop soon. Lots of flowers to be planted too. Good thing i don't have a regular job!

The raised beds are great because it gives me small goals, like weed one bed, and helps cut down on grass and other weeds growing on the edges. It may help conserve water because i only dug down into the clay about the depth of the shovel so the soil underneath may hold in the water. Plus i bring along a stool to sit on and can tend to my garden that is up a bit off the ground. When i was in TN the garden was just too big and the weeds took over. Hoping by having beds, i may have less plants but i am planting them pretty close together. I will be posting on how it works out. At least the garden is fenced in, and the deer seem shy. It is very wild here, and my husband saw a bear with a cub in our driveway!

I did plant more lettuce, arugula and more mustard seed tonight using tires three high
for my planting will add to my six groups of three next year easier than smaller pots

let's see, what did I do in the garden today..
I rototilled a row of beans, potatoes, and tomatoes..
each row twice.
the rows are 200 feet long..
then I hilled about a dozen tomato plants.

I didn't do any more so I will have something to do tomorrow.
Wow, that must be some garden! Do you can a lot?

My Grandparents used to live in Binghamton, The Bartlesons. Old Walt really did enjoy his beer, even had a kegerator. I enjoyed visiting there in the summer, playing on the farm with my cousins. Grandpa lived to be 102! Is the Fox Hospital still in operation in Oneonta? My Dad used to work on the D&H RR most of his life.
Yup, Fox hospital still there.
Few of my friends work for the Canadian Pacific RR, not sure where they're out of here though.

So far today i planted half of the vincas and some gladioli. Not the right time to plant, but they were cheap so in they go! I was happily planting my flowers when along comes the Shepherd, who spills my water and flops down where i was working. We have over 12 acres! Can she not flop down elsewhere? Ugh! She already has two different colors of paint on her, brown from the bunny hutch and white from the kilz i am painting on the storage shelves. She loves throwing muddy, dirty, leafy sticks on top of freshly painted surfaces to draw my attention to her stick! She is a barrel of laughs for my husband.
