What did you do in the garden today?

Animals can be funny that way! I had some goats that refused to eat apples! But once they saw the other goats eating the apples, they wanted their share! Keep trying, they may decide they like things they reject at first.
Try freezing chunks for hot time treats...more likely to take a few bites. I run pea hulls thru my food processor and freeze them in zip bags with water...birds love them.

Shiso is a Japanese herb and ornamental, leaves green on top, purple underneath. A member of the mint family, with a robust herbal flavor and a hint of licorice. Great in small doses in a salad, or to wrap sushi. Also easy to germinate and grow, tho has been a little sulky in this heat. I think it would be considered a tender perennial in KY.

We have that in our garden too....folks here call it purple basil. It spreads by seed so prolifically that I have to thin it out like crazy.

You're probably right - I should try our chickens again on tomatoes & watermelon. A few of them do like watermelon, so maybe the others will catch on eventually. I'd like them to also eat tomatoes - just for the nutrients, and for more variety in their diets. That's funny about your goats - I bet the goats that wouldn't eat the apples were pleasantly surprised once they had a taste of them and realized how good they are! Then they saw that they had been missing out!

I could see how people would flock to your stand for all those wonderful-sounding baked goods, plus the tomatoes sound really interesting, as well. Are they heirloom tomatoes, or new-fangeled (sp-?) ones? I love all the neat tried and true heirloom veggies, but some of the new ones are really great, also. Sounds like you have your hands full with all that baking, but sounds like a lot of fun at the same time! I'm happy for you!

Thanks : )

Almost all heirlooms, including some really neat varieties we got at a seed swap - they originated in Kentucky but are rarely seen these days. A few newer disease resistant hybrids just in case.

Fun while AT the market. Fun perfecting recipes, or new ways to use them. A lot of fun watching people taste and make that OMG this is so good face, lol. Fun baking if it's a good day and my oven cooperates, not fun when under the gun and a market the next day.

They're super similar but shiso is in the perilla family. I grow a little purple basil too and it is truly similar, but the shape of the leaves and flavor are a little different. If I let some flower I can send you some seed - it isn't quite as invasive but I tend to isolate it.

Here is some of mine...a friend who spent time in Japan when her husband was stationed there went ecstatic when she saw "perilla" in my garden. She left with many plants for her garden. I like it in salads and on the ends of my beds to contrast with the other flowers. It seeds later in the fall.

I got my start from Roger's mother who had it for years.

If this looks different than your Shiso, then yes, I would love some seed. Thank you!

Here are my soon to be tested garden weeders...too bad they don't like the taste of "cut and come again". I'm going to be working in the garden in the morning and am going to try the parents and the older black image.jpeg image.jpeg set first. If they are happy and non-destructive then I'll let the younger group loose.

I will be picking the Moonglow pears now too. Ate one off the tree while I was mowing the paths today. Such a smooth textured sweet pear.

It does look a little different. The tooth on yours is bigger, more coarse. I'll save you some seed and let you know when I'm ready to send it so I can grab your address. Maybe I could get some of yours too?

Yes, I will save seed for you. I have plenty. Would you also like walking onions? I have a variety of wild flower seeds and a great variety of dill seed and cilantro/coriander.

I plan to collect some flowering plants i have seen in ditches along the road. Lots of black eyed susans, day lilies and even euchinasia sp ?
You might check for wild purple monarda. It has a lemon scent to the leaves. It has finished bloom here. I have plenty of seed heads if you want some. Butterfly weed (asceclepsis sp) should grow along roadsides too....it has a long root like a carrot.
