What did you do in the garden today?

Maybe your pumpkin blooms are not getting pollinated?

All the males are blooming the females aren't opening at least from what I've seen. This plant is under shade cloth no pumpkin,the other one is not under shade and I did notice a pumpkin on it last week. Temps are down now for the next week I'm thinking of removing cloth. Still mid to high 90's

Been off a couple of days. Picked banana peppers and made 12 pints of salad peppers. Picked and cut up two gallon bags of okra. Canned 14 qts of soup starter.

Tests Tuesday results: the burning pain in my hands is not from my cervical discs but is severe carpal tunnel syndrome. Was happy that neck surgery doesn't need to be done. Doctor will recommend to the neurosurgeon that I need surgery on both hands. The left hand is further damaged in that the nerve is half the size of the right hand. The right hand nerve is half what it should be. Since the right hand is the most painful, surgery will stop the pain. For the left hand, surgery will stop the impingement saving what nerve I have. Will look at mid fall when things slow down some. Six to eight week recovery for each hand...one hand at a time.
My sister had surgery on her right hand and several years ago...said she was glad she did...avid gardener.

Wow, you've been busy. I'll take some of those peppers off your hands if you have too many!

Happy for you that it's not neck surgery, I remember you didn't want to go down that road. Hope the hand surgeries help too. It's a miserable thing when everything you do hurts.

@NanaKat I'm do glad to hear it isn't your spine/discs! Not fun anyway, but at least the carpal tunnel surgery isn't a fusion. Happy for you!

Had tummy troubles night before last and all day yesterday, so I got nada done. HE did get my chicken ramp made and screened in. He didn't ask for input, but I'm grateful he's tried. I'll adjust and make it work.

Not doing much in the garden today. Harvested cukes and okra. watering now. Will caulk some more, maybe paint on henhouse.

Weatherman last night said our weather is "frustratingly unstable and difficult to predict" right now. So even the pros are not able to tell what the heck is going on!

I found an "illicit weed" plant amongst the high grass and regular weeds along my back fence this morning. Yup, one of those. Guessing a bird dropped or pooped a seed? I know it is a true weed and can grow almost anywhere, and does. The local law here burns big patches of it on undeveloped land and along the Trinity river all the time, though I'm guessing all those are intentionally cultivated. I'll just have to keep my eyes open for more. Don't want to go to jail for stuff I didn't plant! I can just see me telling them it just came up on its own. It's not mine! Bet they never heard that one before.

That's my guess. Might be due to high temps, or possibly shade cloth excluding pollinators? Are there even any female blossoms present? Are they aborting?

Missed the mushroom spawn part last time. Where do you get starts, wild or bought in box? I was extremely lucky to get some morels this year in my compost pile. After looking at the morels map they don't usually grow this far south in California. Must have been all the rain we received.

I got them at the Fedco Tree Sale this spring. There was a booth set up. Apparently, my neighbor had the perfect environment, and watered them enough through the hot spell. Her spawn is fruiting well, though it was attacked by slugs last night. At least I know they can be successful, so if I fail this year, I will try again. Perhaps she will give me a couple shrooms to enjoy!

About 45 years ago, my MIL had quite the hedge of nice lush green "weeds" growing in the ditch in front of her house. It created quite the neighborhood stir when the police and fire department showed up and had a bon fire. She stood at the end of the road to be sure that every one knew that it wasn't hers, and she didn't plant it. Yes, you heard me right. 45 years ago! Where has the time gone??????????

I am allergic. Yes I really am. I know because I was prescribed eye drop for glaucoma once that contained the active ingredient and I proved allergic to that. In my younger years, I thought I was just having the normal reactions to that stuff burning, and since I didn't get anything but a headache and blocked sinuses, I never messed with it much. I'm not against it, but it doesn't help me in any way I'm aware of. HE wanted me to pot it up (pun intended), since he likes to indulge on occasion. But I put my foot down. I'd be the one tending to it, and I got enough on my plate. Even if it was not currently illicit, I'd just as soon not.

And thanks, I'm fine. Just a nasty gut bug, probably from being around people the other day. I haven't been out much this season, so my immunities might be down. Gotta get exposed to all the germs more.

@Pensmaster I was growing culinary mushrooms indoors until about to years ago. I'll dig around for my source of spawn. They had a great selection and several ways to get it. I preferred the syringes. I could prepare my own medium using my electric pressure cooker and innoculate it really quickly. Once you get a system, it becomes very fast and easy. I used the cake and bag methods. I had excellent results. I quit after I got my high dollar grow lights and wanted the space for garden and flower plants.

Yes there are females. Just yellow looking and not opening. I'll recheck today.
