So sorry to hear about your crops, Cap. This is probably a stupid question, but what's a hot box?Ok, i am mad an some varmint is going to die! Husband said he accidentally weed whacked my watermelon plant. So i went to pick beans and cherry tomatoes. Every one of my sunflower plants was chewed off about a foot high and leaves eaten. Leaves and stems eaten off my second batch of peas. Stems chewed off so my pea plants will die. Sweet potato plants lost their leaves. String beans lost their leaves. Some critter chewed the heck out of my garden. It did not eat my tomato plants, but ate some of my lettuce which is too small to harvest. My garden is fenced to 4 feet but a deer could jump in. Husband says not deer because of no tracks. But our soil is pretty hard except where i dug it up. I am ordering a hot box tonight. There may be nothing to protect by the time it gets here. So mad, especially about my peas and sunflowers. I may stay up tonight and see what shows up. I would put the shepherd out there but she is in heat.![]()
Caught one a few days ago. Buzzards haven't touched him. Flew over several times. I used watermelon rind as a dish for the cat food to set in. I'll have to try the marshmallows next.I caught the crappy raccoon that decimated my corn crop. Have a heart strikes again. 3 marshmallows and a container of water. Works every time.
I felt absolutely no remorse when I dispatched the dirty little thief. DH hauled the remains out to the lower forty for the varmints to enjoy. Later that day I saw the vultures circling the area and told them bon apatite.
We have several times. The adults liked layer pellets laced with carrot strips. A few weeks ago we caught two young rabbits together using a pear an a squirrel sized trap. Guess they were running together.Anybody ever caught a rabbit in a Have a Heart trap?
No, never caught a rabbit in our trap, but never baited it for rabbits, either. Great idea though! We have quite a few rabbits around here that wreak havoc on our blue fescue grass & our burning bushes in the fall/winter. I used to love rabbits, but now not so much. Our dog has dispatched quite a few inside the fencing, but in the front yard, where our dog can't reach, the rabbits have a hay day.Somebody on the forum said that the trick is to put a container of water in with whatever bait you use. Raccoon want to wash their food before they eat it. I use either an old deli container, or an old can that canned meat comes in. I guess marshmallows are a treat they really like.
I've also read to take a can of cat food or tuna and punch holes in it with a triangular can opener. They have to pick it up to putter with it and wind up triggering the trap door.
I had the funniest thing happen tonight. I was locking up the birds and chasing one in the general direction of the coop, which took me near the fence parameter. I looked up and there was a young rabbit on the other side of the fence. Not 18 inches away from me. I walked towards it. It stood there staring at me. I told it to at least have the good graces to act afraid of me, even if it wasn't. It wasn't. It just sauntered away at a leisurely hop.

Fence charger. No stupid questions, learning is good.So sorry to hear about your crops, Cap. This is probably a stupid question, but what's a hot box?
My neighbors in TN caught a fox in their trap set for coons and let it go! It caused me lots of losses with the chickens. We have several times. Rabbits we transport to a new location, but coons, etc get dispatched.
