What did you do in the garden today?

I tried finding paw paw trees locally this last year and struck out. I know my area is marginal for them, but I have a good spot picked out I think one will thrive in. I'm going to hunt for seeds, preferably as local as possible. I've been wanting them for so long! We shall see.
No worries, i can send you some! Pm me your addy.

:welcome Hi, MommaHen2Many! Have found this to be a fun, friendly, informative thread. Glad to have you aboard! You actually had strangers come to your house with a bag of carrots to feed the wild rabbits in your yard? Must be some hard-core PETA members... LOL.

Cant really call it a "yard" it is 6 acres, the house sits near the back of the acreage and it really looks like a Christmas tree farm (they were here when we bought the place 5 years ago) so folks "walking dogs" think they can let their doggies, or kids, or themselves chase the rabbits, I worry for my chickens free ranging. I've asked hubby to put up no trespassing signs, and he says he doesn't want to...except he found a dad & two boys today deep in the trees, said they were "geo cashing" but he said they didn't have any equipment. I keep thinking we should have bought land/house further out. The first year we were here, they put in something like 40 houses on 6 acres just up the street....that is when it all started. Now someone is doing the same thing on another road just down from us. So they will all come & try to "walk their dog" in the country! oh well progress...if we don't like we can always move somewhere else ....sigh....My garden is almost built & so is my coop....I really don't want to move. The picture is our driveway, looking down to the other houses, that are on the street that our property is up against. IMG_7284.JPG I have to say lots of room for the chickens to run around though! This was last september...its already this dry now, and has been for about 5 weeks. CRAZY dry. off to bed getting too late for me!

Husband discovered our place is loaded with paw paw trees down by the river!
We ate green beans from the garden with supper tonight! And i picked the first ripe full sized tomato!
A friend sent me a box of bulbs and other plants, so i will need to plant those soon.
Oh! And our storage buildings are coming Thursday! It will be great to put the mule in instead of putting tarps over it all the time. And i will be able to build a workshop!
I fixed the driveway alert system so maybe it will work again.
My MIL grew up in her younger years in Ohio, and she told me about Paw Paw trees. Very cool that you have some. I checked out a book from the library on them, and they even talked about finding one at Monticello and the conservators didnt even know that it was a paw paw tree.!

If I lived there, you can bet there would be fencing & no trespassing signs going up immediately! I like people, but not when they intrude onto my personal property! Unfortunately, you just can't trust everyone now days, and I wouldn't take kindly to strangers helping themselves to my property. I also wouldn't want dogs getting anywhere near my chickens. Years ago, a dog tore up our "adopted" gorgeous jungle fowl-type roo and left nothing but his beautiful feathers all over. He was trying to protect our hen. :hit

We live on a paved state highway outside a small country town and own 428 acres for the home ranch and another 155 near a neighboring town.

Without signs, your local police will not respond to nuisance trespassing. They might make a report, but it goes nowhere. We learned the hard way. We now have signs posted for no trespassing and no hunting on all our road fences and on shared fences with certain neighbors.

Our ponds have been approached many times by folks who think fishing/frogging would be fun for their kids. We have had to take down deer stands that someone has tried building over the years.

PM sent. Your are a treasure! :hugs No rush, my grow room won't be ready for a while yet.

Trespassers are not funny. I've had stray rounds hitting the house, hunting blinds, trash killing or injuring stock, busted squatters, found hidden drugs and drug paraphernalia and a small guerilla grow op, used condoms, stolen property dumped/cached, etc on my old place. It was scary sometimes. Before I got Ruger and Remington, my rott x ridgeback pair, we had strangers wandering all over. Regular barbed wire didn't stop them. A few times they cut fence, putting about a half million dollars of bloodstock at risk, not to mention my grandfather's life's work! You must post your property. Fences will keep out the casual dog walkers and some kids. Signs that advertise your guard dogs, electric fence, surveillance, and armed response will sure cut down on unwanted visitors. Whether you actually have all those protective measures or not, you can still make them wonder if you might.

I agree on posting property. I would be livid if folks used my property for their dog's potty station. Not to mention the risk to your free range flock with such arrangements. Nor would I want strangers walking around on my property. If you post it, you have legal recourse. You have made notice that trespassers are not welcome. However, I would not post a "Beware of dog" sign. I've heard that such a sign is an admission that your dog is human aggressive. This is a red flag to insurance companies, and may come back to bite you.
