What did you do in the garden today?

That's too bad @Pensmaster I can relate. We had 2 apples on our tree, it's a little tree still, and the wild birds were out there pecking them and ruined them. They were so close! Good thing those particular birds are protected or I woulda been out there with the air shotgun! So irritating.

2 weeks tomorrow from when i started the hoop coop, just a few details to finish up. 20171031_171350.jpg
I have had 2 people tell me it would be a good grow house for marijuana!

Moved some blocks and an old gate out to the yard and made a small shelter for the chickens. Took down the little coop and moved the "run" to another area. It's partially covered with shade cloth and provides pass through via two doors. Moved the wire dog crate into the big coop and moved some rocks out of the chicken yard; more of those to move. Also moved some big chunks of tree trunk around the yard. Took down the sunbrella until next year. Dumped the bedding from the chicks into the compost pile.
Raked the entire backyard and put the poop in the compost too.
Tomorrow I'll do the patio, have a few things to put in the shed too. Going to pull up the wire fence around the apple tree and put some bricks there instead.
I must say the morning was quite peaceful without the roo. I sat at the picnic table with my morning coffee before chores and the girls came to visit.
What happened to your roo? I'm thinking we may have to get rid of ours - he's being kind of mean to the young pullets, and I won't stand for that if he keeps it up. Do your hens seem to mind the rooster not being there? Our oldest chickens (including the rooster) have been together for about 4.5 years, so I don't know how the older hens would react if he were suddenly gone (I think the pullets would rejoice!).

:lau Husband and i are married but use different last names. I don't know about legality of MJ in VA. More interested in growing veggies.:ya

He went to the freezer. I got him as a "pullet" at the end of January this year. He was very rough on the girls and human aggressive. He was raised from a chick with 5 girls.
Everyone seem more at peace. The girls naturally would come to see me when I went outside and he would constantly create a ruckus and vie for their attention. He pulled out feathers, drove the girls out of the coop when they didn't want to go. So it's nice and they seem happier.
They also have chicks to deal with and one of those is a roo. I'm hoping they'll teach him some manners.
The way I see it, there's going to be a death in the flock at some point. As the keeper, if it's my job to keep them happy and healthy. I made decisions for their benefit.
If you think it's time, do it or get it done and over with. Don't torture yourself over it.

ETA I really thought about this for a while before taking action. Didn't want to seem flippant about it.

The squirrels took about 200 apples off our tree when we were on vacation one year. They eat a bit, drop it and go get another one. After that he thinned them out with a pellet gun. Tree rats!

There were grey squirrels in the area. Weird part every bit of the apple was gone, including those on the ground.

I’m up to 18 trapped ground squirrels in the back chicken coop. Not seeing any running around when I come out so hopefully they are thinned out as well. Observed that the ground squirrels were eating the Buckeye pods and started using them in the traps.

Hoping that the chickens will settle down now and no more squirrels eating their eggs.

Yeah, the squirrels cart them off before eating. I had a pet grey squirrel when i was in college. It was scared of trees because it was raised indoors. Once i was peeling potatoes and she picked up a big one and struggled to carry it off. So funny! But not funny when they strip your orchard!
