What did you do in the garden today?

What a fabulous way to organise your seeds with a peg for the year! Mine are just all in a box in a big mess
I put in some sort of kale last year (green) and it did do quite well now I think of it - we ate quite a bit of it when it was small as part of a mixed salad but when it got bigger I wasn't quite sure what to do with it and then it got lots of holes from some sort of bug so I kind of forgot about it!

I'm currently out doing some weeding. I have also discovered a few bulbs of garlic I obviously missed last year now sprouting like mad - can I dig them up and separate the bulbs into cloves and replant as I'm guessing they aren't going to work as they are? Or any other suggestions?

Oh and good to know about the seeds still working, I have lots left which will be the 3rd year of planting so nice to know can still give them a go!

I agree lg that's great getting seeds that old to produce.

Last year I still had seeds from 2010 but threw them out after I got liw germination. I bought almost all my seeds from one company most did great. I had trouble with a couple but I chalked it up to so much rain and not enough sun.
I bought all new seeds again this year.
Hoping I won't have to buy any for a few years.

I am vindicated. Hubby was just talking with me about my seed stash tonight. Urging me to get rid of some of them. So... I'm not the only one who has multiple packets of old seeds. Really it's not a problem... just b/c some of them date back to 2009. I had a great germination of 9 year old tomato seeds several years ago!

Did you refrigerate your seeds? That's supposed to help them stay viable longer, and if you freeze them, they supposedly last almost indefinitely. I recently bought a large airtight jar with a locking lid that I may use to store seeds in, though not sure if it will be in the fridge or freezer.

I keep my seeds in the fridge.

I keep mine in the coolest part of the house, with a few of those silica packs you get in random packages in the box to keep the moisture low.

PS Poule--I just did the clothes pin thing a couple weeks ago. I was dying to do something garden-y, so that was how I scratched that itch. It also made me go and pare down my to-buy list.

Did you refrigerate your seeds?

No. I don't have the space. So, I just keep them in the coolest part of the house. Silica packets are great. I once asked my pharmacy to save some packets for me. I returned a week later to get them, and they handed me about a # of them!!! That should last me a while.

Haha, ya'll keep your seeds so fancy. Mine are also just in a box... Not even in the coolest part of my house or with silica packets. Just on a shelf with my board games in a corner. Some of my seeds are a little older. I have bean seeds from 2-3 years ago... I always save too many beans cause they are so easy to save. I have no idea how old some of them are... I was given them years ago by a fellow homesteader... We did some seed trades when she came to buy rabbits from me. I expect they are pretty well gone by now, especially the onions. Shame. Maybe I will sprinkle those onions seeds on a pot of soil and see what comes up. The worst that happens is nothing happens.
