What did you do in the garden today?

I hate peat pots. The few times I've used them, they get moldy, and if I restrict water to prevent that, the soil dries out completely. Nothing but styrofoam cups, plastic cups/pots and plastic 6 packs here. Styrofoam is awesome b/c it insulates the roots. And the cups are a nice size to encourage the plants to grow well.

I also dislike peat pots. The roots get bound up in them and have a lot of trouble breaking through. I'm OK with dealing with some mold issues in exchange for a "plantable pot" but you still have to break these pots up and that means tearing up the roots that were trying to break through them.
That's why I like the newspaper pots. They break down much easier and the roots just pop right through the thin newspaper layers. You can plant them directly because by the time they've spent 4-12 weeks with seedlings in them they're already starting to break down a little from the water applied to them. And they still add carbon into the soil.

I spent time watering a bunch of my seedlings today. My plants are all growing pretty well. My anaheims and cayennes are sprouting, the jalapenos are still lagging behind, but they always do. The sweet chocolate peppers are also popping up well. The basil transplants are doing OK, a little bit of fungus spotting on some leaves.

My "go to" seedling mix is Pr0-Mix with microrhizae
