What did you do in the garden today?

I got one about five years ago and had one end up at my house. I’m the only person in the world I know that can pull up in their driveway in find a random baby potbelly pig hanging out in their yard. I never could get him to leave and didn’t have the heart to just let him live in the middle of the yard for the elements. So now he’s here to irritate my older potbelly.

I was wondering does anyone have experience with insect netting for the garden. After years of dealing with caterpillar frustration with my kale I realize insect netting was my only option. I’m just not sure when to put it on they just started sprouting. Not the whole 6 x 6 area but probably about half and I’m not sure if I should put it on now or wait till they’re a bit bigger

I would LOVE it if I pulled in my driveway to a pot-bellied pig! Or a baby pygmy goat or two. I need to get out into the country, I'm telling you...

I put a floating row cover over everything and pin it down on the edges of the raised bed. Haven't done it this year, but I probably should.

Weather here is chilly again, dang it all! Mid-April in eastern NC should NOT be this cold.

Put your row cover on immediately. That will prevent the issue before it gets a chance to start. For Cole crops, you can leave it on all season. For cucurbits and other fruiting plants, you need to take it off when the plants start to bloom. I got tired of the fragile nature of the typical agribon fabric, and started buying sheer curtains at Salvation Army store. I figure those will give me about 5 years of good use. I also have some full size patio door screens which will come in handy to protect those crops.

The sheer curtain idea sounds pretty awesome. I don’t know how I ended up with all of them but I have about 10 sets of sheer curtains in my linen closet that I will probably never use. They’re all much too long for my windows. I already bought the row covers so I will go ahead and put it on today and pin it down. The kale was the only thing I planned on using it for just because otherwise I would be needing A whole whole lot if I was going to be covering everything. But I might try to cover my Zuchinni and squash plants till they bloom this year to see if I can maybe delay the squash bug epidemic
