Now blossoms are dropping on 3 tomato plants and blossom end rot experienced on 2 plants. All this in same bed. Clearly, a calcium issue is at play- there is not enough despite amending on the spring with bone meal and gypsum. Might also be lacking in another nutrient too, although I did fertilize in the spring and added more fertilizer and OS and bone meal at base of these plants last week. Another issue could be weather. Apparently too hot in day combined with hot night temps (above 70F) and high humidity can also impact blossoms and blossom set. Varieties can help - ones that grow well in the area. I have 8 or 9 varieties planted, mostly hybrid, a few heirloom, and 3 cherry types (which are doing well).
So....I bought 2 things online, should arrive today. Jobe’s Tomato fertilizer spikes 6-18-6, so lower on the nitrogen, higher on the P. Then tomato blossom set spray by Bonide. Apparently it is a hormone spray with Ca+. Lots of reviews indicating successful blossom set. We will see if these work.
The tomatoes planted in the compost pile (a years worth of egg shells, etc) with some added bagged dirt are having no problems...imagine that. LOL.
Tomatoes are also planted in a 3rd bed. Some are same varieties as in the problem bed, but they are doing well so far.
Fruit set has been very nice on a hybrid called “Super Sonic”, so hopefully it is a tasty tomato and keeps producing.
