What did you do in the garden today?

Afternoon all. Supposed to be super wet for trick or treaters. We don't get many anyway, but with the rain we may get none.

I need more chickens. :hit We weren't getting enough eggs as it was, now to be down one hurts. I wish I could just buy 3 & throw them in. :barnie My neighbor is culling her flock in a week or 2, they will purchase 15 or so in the spring & offered to get me a few chicks & raise them till they can be outside & I can work them in (hoping my girls don't kill anyone in the process). I need to figure out what breed I want. I think I might want 1 that will go broody so I have a way to integrate from now on. But maybe that's not a good idea. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? I constantly flip flop on what I want to do.

Almost an ich last night. Another two tonight. Then it all melts.
Love the pic!!

Good morning gardeners. It's about 145 AM here. I heard something fall over outside and the wind is whistling through the eaves.

There are a few carrots, some curly mustard and peas growing. Only one Echinacea sprout though. Now that the weather is cooling off we have more weeds I need to pull before they get huge.

I moved the chicks into the big coop, they're still learning it's their new home. I hope they get it figured out soon, I have wee ones to move outside. They out number the big girls 2:1 so I have no idea why they run from them when they should be taking over the world instead. I had to put my Silkie terrier down last Friday and then hubs snapped a tendon in his ankle while we were walking the dogs Saturday afternoon. My list of things to do is far too long and I have no idea where I'm going to find the time to do everything plus work full time. I find myself cutting back on sleep to make more time but I'm grumpy without my z's.

Anyway, sorry to ramble. Have a good day all.
Ugh, sorry to hear about both, how is how is DH? Will he need surgery or anything?

The snow is falling. Hallmark Channel is filming Candy Cane lane in the neighboring village. They dumped a BOAT load of money into the village to support it (Hallmark founder is from there). The village used the money to revamp downtown square and now Hallmark has decorated it for Christmas...ALL OUT decorated it. Tonight is filming and just on cue, it's snowing those giant cinematic snowflakes!

The roads are slick and snow covered.

I'm staying in. Windchill is 14 degrees.

I make that white chili with sausage. YUM! OC it's no longer WHITE chili, but still excellent.

No garden or plant projects for the day. I have misplaced a family tree binder. It's driving me insane. I can see it in my brain, but not in the house. ARGH!

Later I'll get to work on warping the loom and get some cooking done. Tacos for dinner.
We had Hallmark Channel out here filming a Christmas movie a month or 2 ago too! Pretty sure I'll never see it. LOL

Well it depends on whether or not you like raising chicks. I can't stand it. Can NOT stand it. But when I've had to raise them I've had no problem getting them to hang with the flock as I keep them separate but together for long periods of time first.

Broodies are the best! BUT keeping a broody you have to decide if you will keep her with the rest of the flock to brood and then raise, which causes sometimes RAMPANT broodiness within the flock (except for those breeds that NEVER go broody, they do exist).

I'd rather deal with breaking other broodies than raise chicks.

Thanks Sueby. Yes to surgery, it's not broken so tendon for sure. We just need the MRI and an appointment with a surgeon now.

I have never wanted to raise chicks (or humans for that matter, lol)! I was hoping I could get a broody to do it! The girls I have now are red sex links & will (I assume) never go broody. My thought is buying a couple of sexed day olds & sticking them under a broody, I don't want to deal with eggs & having to cull male chicks. But I don't know if my RSLs will kill babies or if I'll have to separate broody & babies out - I might not have room for that. DH will kill me if I make him build me a 2nd coop. :gig

Or is it easier to separate half the run & slowly integrate pullets in with the flock. But I'd still need some type of a temporary coop.

Either way, DH is going to kill me I guess. :lau:gig

they are human incubators mine have their own coop not so small but choose to put them there it and my grow out where shipping crates for furniture or medical equipment in the end it did get another room to it but cannot stand upright in it
