Thank you for your condolences ladies, she was my constant companion for quite a while

@penny1960 you didn't miss anything. I'm cutting back on some of the threads for a while. I've got a lot of chickens to wrangle anyway, 13 chicks hatched in the last week and there are 11 cockerels and pullets of various ages outside that I'm working on integrating now. Add the things hubs used to do but can't makes for busy days when you work full time too.

I'm headed off to bed soon, enjoy the weekend everyone

igorsMistress, so sorry about your dog. I misread your previous post - when you said silkie terrier, I somehow only saw the "silkie" part. Thought you had lost a silkie hen. I know it's really devastating to lose a dog. Sorry for what you're going through.

I have never ever ever had success with putting day old chicks under a broody. Then I end up raising them myself. UGH. And buying sexlink birds isn't 100% Ask Penny/Sheldon who now crows down the road.

There isn't too much worse than losing a good dog.

I remember when i had to put my Jazzy down, I went into work that Monday morning and very first thing my boss said was 'Morning Sue, how are you?' and I started BAWLING. I'm a grown woman! I randomly cried over her for years, even got her paw tattooed on my foot. Dogs are the best.

Good morning all. Sorry for your loss @igorsMistress. Your pets are family members and losing any is painful. Happy soggy Halloween. Today is supposed to be a total washout and Trick or Treating has been rescheduled in many cities and towns in New England. I guess I need to refrain from digging into the leftover candy for a few days. LOL! The chicken math dilemma @Sueby. I'm struggling with that myself. I have one BR that is showing broody tendencies, so I'm considering letting her have a go at it. I'm contemplating putting another addition onto the coop and using that as a brooding section and grow out pen for what would be meat birds. My big concern is selling off excess layers. I have a brooder plate if I need however since I don't have electricity in my coop I would have to either keep the brooder in the garage or see if I can power the plate with a battery. Much to consider. We are being treated to warm temperatures for a couple of days. I turned the pellet stove off yesterday morning. It's currently 60F outside. Nice before it gets cold for good. Snow is trying to sneak into the forecast for the end of next week. We'll see. Have a great day everyone.

You are so right, dogs are the best. Midge was the only dog that I could take out with the chickens or run around out front and she would stay with me. I do the random crying, look to make sure she's following, etc. She was the one who roamed the house with me or went out to protect me from the beasts in the yard when I couldn't sleep.

We have 2 very loving younger dogs who have lessened the blow. They know when you need them, that's for sure.

@igorsMistress, I thought chicken too! But, I’m sorry for your loss- it is hard to lose a pet that has been in your life, and was well loved.

Oh my not fair take me back years so much loss they did not prepare us for flood of tears from a dog when I lost my foundation girl Maline I did not work for a week I am pushover that way I still can tear up for her or Gunner her son not to mention the others that crossed into my life
