What did you do in the garden today?

Bad rooster!!

I'm thinking the same @Wee Farmer Sarah - this weekend I'll dig them up. DH is flying into Alabama to pick up a toterhome we bought (an RV that will pull our 2 car trailer) so I'll be able to get the last of the garden tucked in for the winter. I need two more bags of compost & it's done. Thankfully that storm brought down 90% of the leaves so it was a pretty easy cleanup this fall.

Checked on the chickens last night & they made it in before the door closed like good little girls. Still not sure if the plastic run wrapping threw them off or they wanted to party it up on a Sat night.:gig

Neighbor said she saw a fox hanging out in the yard here. All good as long as it doesn't have a taste for chickens! I'll just have to keep an eye out as the 'day pen' isn't secure yet.

Hi all. Took today off work, just been chilling all day, plus have the next four days off, as well.

Regarding critters, on Friday night when I got home from work it was already dark, so went to check on the chickens to make sure their automatic door had shut (and that they were all INSIDE). So, the chickens were inside and door was shut, but our dog, Brutus, was barking like crazy right next to the coop. Turns out there was an opossum in a spot that Brutus couldn't get at. Then the opossum tried to run behind a tree but Brutus grabbed it and flung it. When it landed on the ground of course it started playing possum. Well, Hubs grabbed a large ice chopper and killed it. We have lost a pet cat and a chicken to opossums (years ago), so there is no love lost between us and them, and we show no mercy on them. So glad the automatic door was working or we would probably have lost some chickens!

Wow, I never thought an opossum would kill a chicken! They are always touted as so good to have around (I live minutes from Lyme CT & they eat ticks). Good to know. & good boy Brutus!

Oh heck, yeah. When we lived down south, hordes of them (opossums) came out every night after our chickens (and killed one of our cats). And yes, Brutus is quite the hunter. Just a mutt rescue dog, but he's pure gold to me! :love

I have one more cushaw to cook up and then a pumpkin for the girls. THis dark at 530 is so depressing. I could do it if it had been gradual like when we lived in NoDak, but bleh ugh. Every daylight bulb in the house is blazing so I don't want to just go to sleep.

Now that it's dark on both ends of my day, ALL the outdoor chores fall on me. Not A Fan.

I don't mind it, I start work early (6:30am) but now it's light out when I get there. I can't see at night very well so I hate driving to work in the dark. It won't stay this way long, but I like it for now! It's never dark on my way home either way. But the poor chickens only get an hour out of the run at night now before it's dark.

I need to retire! Only 11 1/2 more years. Ugh.

Good morning gardeners. I think I'm getting a handle on the time change thing. I slept a little better and woke up a 5:30 (what used to be 6:30) and went out to turn on the light in the chicken coop. I've only found 2 eggs since that big storm and then the clock change. I'm hoping the pullets get back to laying regular soon. I did manage to get a lot of the leaves cleaned up in the backyard yesterday. Around the chicken coop it was mostly acorns and pine needles. It's supposed to rain later this morning so I'm hoping to get the last little bit cleaned up before the rain starts. I've seen a lot of birds migrating south this past week. Geese are pretty much the regulars, however, there was a huge flock of crows migrating south-west. I guess they were headed to either New Orleans or Las Vegas, LOL! I want to get the compost spread in the garden before it freezes. Last year it froze solid over the winter because the temps were so low and took half the Spring to thaw. It's sounding more like we may get a dusting of snow overnight Thursday into Friday. Not enough to crank up the snow blower. I think it may by-pass you @Sueby they are saying it's more north of I-90. But it will still get cold. Brrr! Have a great day everyone.
