What did you do in the garden today?

THey're supposed to have ants. The ants chew the flower pods open. Without them, they won't bloom.

7 hours on the tractor. Had one load left and needed more gas. Heading up to the driveway, blew a tire. UGH.

Did the last load and the raking by hand. So sore and tired I could cry.

Factory installed tire will NOT come off without a pneumatic wrench. UGH. trip to town tomorrow to pick up one that is powerful enough to deal with this tire. Then BACK to town to drop tire of for repair. It is totally shredded.

yes, true for regular peonies that die back to the ground every fall. They need the ants. The tree peonies have a woodsy stem above ground, and I never saw ants with these. Here are a couple of pics of the tree peony: Included one with a little friend for size comparison!

Wow Karen let it go give yourself a break girl

I did take a break today! I only worked on some pumpkins. Those are much easier to cut open! The bad ones I took the seeds out and threw the remains into the garden to rot. The pumpkins that still were good or had good parts to them I cut up to can. I didn't cook or can them yet. I had 2 tickets to the St. Louis Blues hockey game tonight so a friend and I went. We WON!! I will cook and can the pumpkin tomorrow and deal with the 5 remaining pumpkins. My chickens and turkeys will even eat them as they are turning to mush.

Good morning. Nothing going on in my garden except rain and maybe snow showers today. It rained pretty much all day yesterday. It did clear for about an hour and I was able to let the chickens out of their run for a little while. I managed to get a chicken saddle on one of my pullets. My rooster has been overly amorous with her and her feathers are getting a little too ruffled for my liking. I really didn't get much else done because I got sidetracked and started watching the impeachment hearings on TV. All I will say is that I miss my regular soap opera. Today I'm going to the Senior Center for exercise class, lunch and to work on my social skills. Tomorrow I WILL get the final painting done in my sunroom. After reading all of your posts, I feel like a slacker. And I'm sorry, I'm not a fan of peonies. I have some that came with the house and they are way too high maintenance for me. I do kind of like the peony tree @Acre4Me. A little pruning and it's good. All the rain we have had lately has thawed the ground out, so would I be foolish to finish planting some daffodils? I still have some bulbs left and I really love daffodils. Thoughts anyone? Have a great day and don't forget to give yourself a break now and then. You deserve it!

Hi all. I've never even seen a peony, lol!

My chickens won't eat pumpkin unless I cook it for them, I tried throwing the other half in to them uncooked & days later it still sits there. They didn't even eat the seeds. High maintenance critters.

We didn't get the fence up because the ground was too frozen, but this Sat looks like a go. My friend & I did make 50 pints of Christmas Jam though! It's pretty tasty & glad to have that out of the way. I still have tomatoes in the freezer I need to can.

Good afternoon gardeners

It started raining yesterday afternoon, earlier than predicted, and hasn't stopped for long between showers. It was estimated we'd get an inch or two but I'm pretty sure we've surpassed that already and this is supposed to continue through tomorrow. It's really storming right now, blowing like crazy with lightning and long rolling thunder We took the pups to the pet store to get treats and got home just as huge drops started hitting the windshield.

The chickens aren't too happy, poor babies. The big girls will be thrilled with the compost pile in a day or two though. Plus the few weeds in the garden will be easy to pull.

So, I've always admired the outdoor winter planters made with birch branches, assorted pine boughs, pine cones, etc., but I don't want to pay the prices they charge for the large ones sold at stores. Our two birch trees died a few years ago , so today Hubs cut them down. Then he had me come out and tell him which branches I wanted cut, how long I wanted them, etc. I had him cut enough for three planters, and maybe next week I will begin working on them. I may also make some other decorations for inside the house with birch branches/logs, as well. I'm excited to get going on them.
