i get a 5 gallon bucket full for 2.99. I buy the bricks that you soak in water. Plus I don't have to add anything to combat the acid, PLUS I don't get a screaming sinus headache from the yuck in the peat moss. LOL.

Went to check the bees since we got down to -4 this week, it's now 50. I expected to find a hive of dead and starved bees. Nope. 2 billion hyper, cooped up, pissed off bees. Sigh. One determined girl found a gap in my suit and stung my ankle. My fault, wasn't wearing bee boots, just ankle socks and sneakers (and my full suit). Swore a lot, tossed more food in there, closed 'em up and put all their insulation back on, swore some more and came in.

ow ow ow ow ....that's what I get for being a good keeper.

Good afternoon gardeners. We're in the mid 70s and daytime temps should be there all week. I cleaned up the big coop a little and cleaned the nest box. I checked the schedule for bulk trash, good thing because we have to get it out for collection next week. We ended up putting off processing cockerels until tomorrow and spent almost 6 hours trimming our mesquite trees out front. I'm pooped but hubs has some home grown mesquite for the bbq drying I have a few more things to get out early tomorrow morning and I'd like to trim the bougainvillea and get that out too. That will leave one more big bush to trim but that can go in the compost pile. The hibiscus is suffering from shock so I'm going to give it some super thrive tomorrow morning and I have the stump from a potato bush to finish digging out. More seedlings, squash, but I'm hoping the warmer temps this week will get the jalapenos going. Have a great evening everyone.

Yea i dont know what it is about swearing but it definitely helps pain go away

2-3 weeks until I plant the first seeds indoors... It cannot come soon enough. And those seeds are the ones that will grow 8 weeks indoors before being transplanted outside at the very start of May which is my expected frost free time. That certainly cannot come soon enough. I have 3 business trips between now and May that will help pass some of the time and at least. I also will be able to break ground next weekend I hope and start building the new fence and garden beds and move the current garden beds and compost bins. Once the soil is not too wet I'll be able to get put the new tiller to work too.

@TropicalBabies so I was thinking about your dog trapping situation and I think you're using the wrong bait with live chicken. We catch dogs every night in one of our bathroom traps when they raid the cat litter box. Chicken droppings are also a favorite of our dogs you might add those to your trap

Good morning gardeners. We slept without the heater last night, but I knew it was chilly because the dogs were snuggled between us in bed rather than taking the whole thing. It was 70! Can you tell these kids are from AZ? We are processing 3 roos today, I put them in the mini coop last night, and I'm going to water the ginger and check soil moisture in the garden and that's it outside today. Laundry and grocery shopping are necessary evils. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning all. Good golly it's above freezing already. There's still ice on the ground. I am so hoping some of it melts today. The chickens need to get out and putter about to break up their boredom. I repotted my little bay laurel tree. I found a nice clay pot in the garage. The roots were almost in the drainage hole of the original pot so I guess I made a good call. Today is laundry and clean the pellet stove day. I should be able to get the leeks started tomorrow. I actually got a reminder from the Old Farmer's Almanac that the onion family can be planted indoors now. I checked out the boards I found in the garage and one is about 10 inches by 8 ft. It is stained and actually a nice looking board. I don't want to use that for the garden. The other "boards" appear to be a bifold door of some sort. I'm pretty sure I can't lift it so it can stay there for now. So it's back to the original plan. I actually start my garden outdoors around mid April, even though the official "last frost date" is in May @BReeder! Peas need to go in as soon as you can work the soil. I have enough plastic sheeting to cover up on cold nights. I did suffer some losses from my early planting last year but that was from a hungry ground hog. And most of the plants he munched on actually bounced back. This year I will be spreading freshly chopped onions about to keep that critter away. Have a great day everyone.
