yeah, I can understand the aversion. Rats in the yard/garden to that extent is a memorable experience in all the wrong ways.

we always make a pumpkin stew that is a bit spicy, and has pumpkin, tomatillos, hominy and Red peppers in it. Sometimes bake it in a pie pumpkin, sometime chunk up the pie pumpkin into cubes andcook it all in a large pot. Yummy in the winter!

Oh yum that sounds sooo goood.

Hello, is there room for me? I brought sourdough starter.

I love this thread so much! I’m new here and actually quite new to gardening as well. I have a 1/8 acre rural development lot that I’m trying to turn into a micro-homestead now that my kiddos are old enough to help out (and be gone for a chunk of the day haha!)

My main goal is to use some permaculture techniques along with some traditional raised bed stuff so that we can grow a good chunk of our food during our somewhat short season.


Just in the last 3 weeks I’ve put in 4 orchard fruit trees and built a compost station out of recycled pallets. The Quack Shack is going up today, and a repurposed bathtub (now duck pond) has gone into the ground with a drain pipe and is ready to rock.

Oh, and I built a second small greenhouse for when my starts are ready to go out.

Now, if only the weather would warm up!

Aloha gardeners!
Oh boy today is warm but a nice breeze has kicked in this afternoon, thank goodness.

I busted out my little scooter to go feed the big dogs. We vaccinated them last eve so giving them a day or two off. I was sweating cutting grass for them. So not ready to be hot again

Back to sanding and painting the VERY last bits and pieces of the front post and rails. Painted the bracket for flag black along with the T straps.

I got a new repeat egg customer who actually lives in the same town as me today. Super cool and convenient. My other favorite regular I can drop off when I feed the horses. That's 8 dozen a month right there. Perfect.

I had a few neighborhood 11yo boys stop by today. They were cruising on their bikes and bored... remember those days??! They were just too fun wanting to know all things about all things. Boys are awesome. I felt it was a bit of a divine gift because I was missing my middle child on his 31st birthday today. He lives on another island and I have not seen him in way too long. These neighborhood boys want our wild roosters -he he!- Well... ok. I told them to build their cages and I would flag them down when we caught them. Maybe make some future chicken farmers out of them. Anywho, they were fun and it's nice to have the time to give to the community and to interact in a positive way.

My mom just got out of surgery. Goods news and bad news. Good news: they caught the infection early enough that they did not have to replace the entire artificial knee.
Bad news:she ruptured her knee joint and tore her quad muscle.
Tomorrow she is scheduled to have a TEE to see if the infection spread to her heart valves or not.

It was in the upper 50's today. I was in Lancaster pa for a work seminar for Stihl power equipment. I was able to stop at a couple garden centers on the way home and those greenhouses looked and smelled awesome!
I'm quite envious of how large and healthy some of those annuals were. Even geraniums with some buds and they don't tolerate chilly weather let alone cold weather.

In the past the only thin I grew for my chicken was green kale. If the leaves were crunchy they loved it.

when I visited a friend in a Lancaster, we visited Longwood Gardens -about half hour away(?). It was amazing!!! Huge greenhouses, outdoor spaces. But it’s for show,constantly changing displays.

@karenerwin - I’m so glad they caught it early enough, but so sorry she has to go through so much additional surgery and healing! I’m hoping the next test shows the infection did not travel to her heart.

Good morning gardeners. I got the second and final harvest of carrots in the crisper last night and pulled a bunch of weeds. Today I'll get the squash and herbs transplanted. The hibiscus is going to be ok I think, there's new growth all over it. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning gardeners. Hope you are all well. I'm wishing for the best for your Mom @karenerwin. Nothing happening in the garden today. I did let the chickens out for about half an hour yesterday. They weren't all that crazy about the wind. The wind has finally died down for now so I'm planning a trip to HD to pick up a few bags of stove pellets. I'm down to 6 bags so I just need a few more. Also will take advantage of the not so windy day and clean the pellet stove. These ashes will likely go on one of my compost piles. I think some of the ground has thawed enough to insert the fruit tree fertilizer spikes. The photos of the crocuses were nice @karenerwin, thank you. I don't expect to see any of that for at least a few more weeks. I have to wait until the garden centers open up for the season before getting estimates on garden soil. They're pretty much snowbirds around here. Closed from Christmas until Spring. This corona virus is pretty scary when you hear about people like the guy from New Hampshire that tested positive for the virus and broke quarantine to go to a party. Then apparently some guy in New York who tested positive rode the subway at least once or twice. Seriously! This is why these things scare me because some people are thoughtless. Some things, like germs, are not meant to be shared. OK, I'm finished my little rant. Take care all, stay healthy and have a great day. (It's OK to laugh)
