What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning!

today is a short school day for the kiddos so I won’t get much done aside from doody duty. Although I’m wondering if anyone here taps trees? We’ve had such a warm wet winter that I’m considering tapping my Alders tomorrow during the few days of freeze/thaw coming up in the forecast. There just wasn’t the right conditions for maple tapping and now I’m worried it’s too late entirely.

I did get my greenhouses finished up yesterday. The countdown to last frost is on!

PS I loved the crocus pic!

Morning all. Winds gusting to 50 today...so Thursday. LOL.

We are so dry that we're under extreme fire watch. No surprise. It's that time of year. The hens played outside yesterday for 4 hours while I worked in the pasture. I'm sunburned and they slept well.

Today is all about sewing and running some errands.

Iris' and day lilies are popping up in the seed house. Nothing else up yet. I still need to get the peonies going. Maybe this weekend and the other flower garden seeds too. Heading for over 70 this weekend and then, you guessed it, snow chance monday night.

Have been having a busy two weeks now. Just checking in with my apple seedlings (red container) and pear seedlings (white container).

Had 15 healthy chicks out of 21 hatch so I’m busy with that. The 16th hatched one is not looking good, if it’s a rooster my husband said we may put him down. We’re going to wait a week.

I will keep asking, are my seedlings still good? No need to put em in their own individual pots yet?

I believe they’ll be good for a while... even if the roots cross it should be fairly easy to separate them. So are these seeds from an apple/pear that you ate? I don’t know pears but apples very rarely are true to seed... most often you may get something that doesn’t fruit or isn’t tasty. And rarely you could get something completely new and wonderful. Most apples are propagated via cuttings and grafting. I still think this is exciting and worth the experimentation/risk.

Yes, something I ate for both. It’s more of an experiment. When I feel I have a green thumb I’ll look into planting apple trees from a nursery. I just don’t want to spend money on one and have it die due to my negligence. I’m still not an expert on plants and haven’t been very successful in gardening.

This is exciting and I think you’re doing great! I’m going through the same with dogwood seeds... they, too, are rarely true to type but that is not stopping me either. Growing is my jam 🌱 I’m excited to see your progress.
