What did you do in the garden today?

We are wishing all goodnight from our mountains! 20200410_191834.jpg 20200410_191746.jpg

Plant a seed potato and it will grow. I had better results in the ground than in containers last year, but I didn't mess with the container plants much. Some people swear by containers and some by the ground. Either way, do some research on the types of potatoes you have before planting. Some potatoes need to be hilled (covering part of the plant as it grows) and others will only grow at the level of the seed potato whether you hill them up or not. The latter type I would not recommend for deep planters like a garbage can as it would not be efficient.
Thank you!! This is very helpful!!! I got red, white, Yukon Gold, and Goldrush... do you know anything about those ones???

Red and white are not really species of potato. Check the bags for a species name.
Potatoes grown in towers or with extensive hilling for higher yields should be "indeterminate" types. "Determinate" types wil not grow upward into a hill or tower. Here are some helpful links:

Okay, I will look to see. They were at my local discount/overstock type store so not sure if there is a specific species or type or not. I just know some had a specific name like the gold ones I mentioned and others just said “red” and white

But I will look and try to find one haha I do know the red said it’s high yielding.

Hilling or towering will not hurt the plant necessarily. Just understand there's the possibility of finding just once later of potatoes rather than a potatoes stacked on each other. Last year we planted a white variety (I forget the name now) that was determinate but we still got a pretty good yield. 5lbs of seed potato resulted in over 20lbs of potatoes.

Btw these are the potatoes, @BReeder! . No species name anywhere. :barnie I looked on the back too but not there either and didn’t want to post too many pictures. :lau

Maybe there IS no variety!? Maybe it’s just whichever ones they happen to be able to get their hands on that year?

This is probably why they were so cheap! :lau

But oh well, a potato is a potato to me. :lau

Well, of course red tastes different than gold or russet or whatever, but I don’t think I would notice the difference between reds anyway. :lau

Forgot the pictures. :lau  @BReeder!

The red ones are huge already.

The other ones are doing pretty well too but nowhere near that big. Much smaller tubers.

I would guess the first the are determinate as they have short harvest times. The "white" may be indeterminate based on its longer harvest time, which is more common in indeterminate I believe.

But again, it doesn't hurt to hill or tower them. Another thing, if you use a container of any sort, be sure it's about 18" wide or more. The potatoes firm up to a foot away from the seed potato. 18" gives up to 9" from center which isn't too bad, but I wouldn't go less. Also ensure you have drainage of course. Potatoes don't like to sit in soggy soil.

Lastly, get those seed potatoes in soil soon. They are putting energy into those shoots you see growing in the last pic. Trim those to just about 2-3 inches with sharp scissors before planting (whether you decide to segment the potatoes or not).

Best of luck! I hope to plant my potatoes soon. I will take pics when I do.
