What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. I watered the vegetable gardens yesterday. Apparently the peas were thirsty because it seems they grew quite a bit overnight. Thanks for the mention about your cabbage @penny1960. I googled it and apparently cabbage takes around 3 months to mature. So plenty of time for it to develop. I'm so pretty much over putting more dirt on my potato plants @karenerwin. It seems the more dirt I add, the taller they grow. They are way over 2 feet tall now. Today I really need to bake some bread and get back to work on the weed whacking. We are in a bit of a drought now so I think getting the trimming done and then mowing the front yard higher than normal will at least make it look neater. After trimming up the backyard it looks so much better and not in need of mowing for awhile. So sorry about your problem with your bloodwork @karenerwin. Since I have moved so far away from the VA Hospital I just can't do a fasting blood anymore. Driving over 50 miles to Boston on an empty stomach and no coffee is just not a good idea. I love the pictures @TropicalBabies. So lovely and very scenic. Thank you. Have a great day everyone.

Good morning gardeners. I walked through the garden and checked on the transplants. Everything was looking bedraggled last last night but they've perked up this morning. I was filling waterers this morning and found more ants so I'm going to have to mix up some permethrin and spray. Have a great day all!

Morning everyone. Lots to catch up on this am, totally loving all the pics.

@NightingaleJen, DH would LOVE your mantis, he adores them! & this is so interesting to me: 'Hubby put in the bypass for the water softener and they improved within two days!'. We have awful well water, we won't even drink it so I wonder if it hinders my garden. My beans seem to have leaves yellowing & I'm not sure why. Unfortunately we have a shared well with 30 neighbors & no basement for a water treatment system. Love the coop too! What are you getting for birds & when?

@igorsMistress - yes thank you for that, that may come in handy!

Picked up some layer feed to hopefully help my shell-less egg layer. Now to go around & mix it into everything that's out there. Need to water the garden today too, no rain in sight. The bear is still in the neighborhood & stressing me out, lol.

I had a pretty busy work day yesterday but managed to water everything (of course it now looks like rain today) and put in a small bed of mini blueberry plants. these ones i will let the chickens have. also moved some struggling strawberry plants out of the pots and into a bed. I harvested my first few black caps this morning!!

We hatched some chicks about 2 weeks ago, so we put them in a cage i the run so they could get some chicken exposure! There are 3 chicks in the cage - and I added a cardboard box so they couldn't be surrounded.

Went for an evening walk in a popular park. Found this guy looking for his dinner.

Today: planting various gourd seeds - trying to make a shade screen for the chickens. Pounded in some stakes and then am stringing jute twine between stakes and hooks on the run roof. Not sure what to expect. I planted all varieties of gourds in little jiffy starter pots, but only one type sprouted. New seeds - but maybe they prefer actual dirt! Hopefully some sprout for me, and the chickens get some shade. Otherwise we have to break out the shade cloth.

I make up a mix of crushed egg shell, bone meal, and baby asprin to feed the hole when planting and then every two weeks. Works a charm.

Never had a problem since.

Three more plants from the terrible nursery starting wilt the other day, so out they came yesterday.

I've lost track of how many 90 degree days we've had in a row so far, 17, 18, 19...anyway. Very little rain too. Wednesday night we might see some, and Thursday might bring upwards of 3 inches. Feast or famine.

Cabbages are starting to set heads.
Baby squash on the vines. Few flowers in the tomatoes.

Purchased beehive is struggling. Most of the bees have vanished and may have gone home, but the queen is still there and laying, so she has a whole summer to train a new hive.

Other hive is going gangbusters.
