Today I noticed funny-looking things growing on it, took one inside and googled it - turns out the tree is a hazelnut!

That is the one tree we haven't added to the property yet but we will!

I put a little stand mister in front of the box fan and pointed it toward the door of the coop; the chickens seem to be feeling better today than they have been.

Something I should try more of - cold salads for summer dinners. I've probably made 3 pasta salads in my life - I like them, just didn't grow up eating them very often, and don't think of them.

We didn't have them much as a kid but I dearly love them now, those and quinoa salads. Great way to use up scraps of pickled stuff, dry salami, cherry tomatoes, olives, cheeses, all sorts of stuff. I like a tart vinegar & olive oil one myself but a nice Greek one is yummy too. Can you tell I love them?

Sure did, took a lovely shower, ate 4 ibuprofen and slept like a log. Don't feel sore at all right now and probably won't till I have to crawl back into the hutch.


Watered the garden and saw to the critters. They all got big piles of red clover for breakfast. Cut enough of the blue borage (the blue stuff is trying to take over the world) to fill a 5 gallon bucket when smashed down then covered it with water. I need to find a lid then let it sit for a couple weeks then strain it and mix the liquid 10 to 1 according to the garden guy from England. Supposed to be a grand liquid fertilizer.

Just took the last of the cockerels out of the oven for lunch. I wish we could have kept one of them as insurance but I'm glad we were able to make sure their lives were good. A neighbor with laying hens said she'd hoped we could have kept one too and loan it to her for her girls. Not sure if she meant for hatching eggs or just dates. In any case, we know a couple of folks in town with more land and they have roosters so if push comes to shove, we should be able to get a working rooster.

All 3 of the free ranging girls laid eggs by the porch. My golf balls were all eaten by snakes, but I found these at Dollar Tree. 8 for a buck isn't bad. Olive even laid for me in the kennel!

Look! Look what I found when I went to spray things with Sriracha!

A BABY SQUASH PLANT! Two, actually! "Costata Romanesco", the only two seeds in a packet from the nursery. Oh, I hope they make it!

That's a 3" paper ring, because I suspect cutworms may be at work. Have I "applied" it properly? Still tempted to go out with an old water jug cut in half to put over each baby plant.

Oh, I also put a ring around this sad pathetic pole bean survivor, but based on the looks of it...is there a point? Should I start over (again)?

ETA: Do you know what I did literally five minutes before finding the germinated squash seedlings? Ordered more squash seeds online because clearly everything I have is defective.

Just don't tell Hubby.

Loosened up the soil around the tomatoes and weeded a bit , gosh , it was hot and sticky today .

My cucumbers are taking over the trellis , and anything around them .

My new Gooseberries are doing pretty good , lots of new growth .

I set the mole trap this afternoon after seeing some new mole activity at the garden and on the lawn . My 6 year old grandson declared to grandma that we are going to sit here by the garden and watch the beaver trap . I told him it takes more than 5 minutes of the trap being set to catch a mole as the trap went off and we caught a mole . We had a good laugh .

I have a soft spot for my chicken. I only hunt hornworms for them and the joy it brings. BT is more efficient, but I do not get to see hornworms getting their day in chicken court that way. Those things look toxic and had me scared of them for most of my youth. But owning a chicken posse was the equalizer.

I read this post out loud to my husband. We feel the same way but you did such a good job with this description!

My arm after spending the day picking wild blackberries. My other arm looks pretty good because I was holding the bucket with it. But the arm pictured is the one that was reaching into all the brambles and it definitely got scratched up!
we got almost 20 cups of berries. It was hard trying to find nice big ones. Most of them were small. Also most of the patch was raspberry red or still green. Any guesses on how many days it takes to go from raspberry red to blackberry black?

Took this puppy with me. She did really good. Gave her lots of water breaks and she stayed in the shade while we picked berries. She did have a bit of tummy trouble on the drive there but was fine on the ride home. She is worn out though.
