Ok, so I donāt exactly have a garden. My entire yard was a jungle and the last few weeks Iāve been cutting head high weeds and bushes with a push mower. Today I made it into the back yard.what I found was corn. Yes, corn.What did you do in your garden today?
I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!
I had put two Tom turkeys in the other section of the yard when they decided to attack my yard boss, Henry... also a Tom turkey.. I tossed sunflower seed and corn out over the fence for them as morning scratch when I gave out scratch to the rest of the flock.
I knew some of the sunflowers sprouted up. Had no clue the corn had grown too. The birds got a few ears of corn as a treat.

This is awesome, welcome to all the new folks, we love the new garden voices!
The big zucchini weighed 2 pounds and 7 ounces! The other one weighed 1 pound 10 ounces. I grated up some smaller zucchinis that I picked a few days ago. I spread it out on several layers and put it in the deep freezer. Hopefully in the morning in I will be able to bag it up!
I also tossed some into the brownies I made.
I took down 7 cattle panels today and tomorrow a friend is coming over with a truck and trailer and we will haul them (plus some others I will buy) down to my son's house.
Yesterday I made 2 pint jars of pickles. I used a bag of pickle juice (?) that you buy at the store. I bought spicy garlic and bread and butter varieties. The bad thing is that you are supposed to eat them up in 1 week. That seems a bit quick to eat!
I also tossed some into the brownies I made.

@NightingaleJen oooohhhh, baby chicks - yay!! So will they be here today or tomorrow? Can't wait for pics! I'm zone 6a too, very glad to know I can't let the rutabagas stay in the ground! I know they needed a frost or 2 to sweeten up, but had no idea they could be ok longer than that if I mulch them. Thank you.

Nice haul @karenerwin! I bought a new pot this year just so that I can can small batches of pickles because refrigerator pickles just don't last long enough! It always seemed like such a waste to fill up the big canner. Of course this year, with all the damage, I won't get to can any, lol.
Speaking of my cuke issues, the neem oil came in last night. I mixed up a batch & waited till dark so I didn't get any bees. I sprayed them good, on my very last plant & there was a bee on a flower & he wasn't moving. That's why I hate spraying anything - even if it's organic'. If it kills bad stuff, it's going to kill good stuff too. I did my best. I pulled 3 completely dead cuke plants this am.
So I just took a walk around the garden & 2 squash bugs were crawling around like 'ha, you killed a bee & we're still here'.
Last night spraying the neem I saw my squash has powdery mildew. Of course it does, why wouldn't it? So I tried mouthwash spray this am, we'll see how that goes. I've had good luck with milk but it's so hot & humid I wanted something that wouldn't stink. If not I'm gonna bust out the copper fungicide again - I'm over this garden this year. It's no longer a joy, it's turned into a stress. I'm ready to burn it all down! 
But on a much more positive note, look at this beautiful set of San Marzanos! They are def my winner this year.

They're climbing well, that tomato next to the tower is the volunteer sungold, it has fruit!
I have about 15-20 Butterfly weed that made it from seed & it looks like they're actually gonna flower this year! They're in a giant pot now, gonna move them out to the garden in the fall.

Penny how's your blood pressure? Did they check you for vertigo? That can be a nasty business and you don't need a fall so be careful please!
Good morning gardeners. I went to let the flock out and didn't drip sweat while I filled the waterers, amazing. It's cloudy and while not cool, it's tolerable. The ants bit the dust, yay! I walked through the yard in bare feet without issue so the pups will be ok. It turns out there were 3 separate plants in the pot of plumbago but I got them planted and gave them some Jobes. Last night I soaked the xeriscape garden and marked out where I want to plant the hopseed bush and sage. I hope the sage is the pink variety, I don't have anything pink in that bed yet.
I have a question about growing lettuce. I've grown the heads but never loose leaf. If you cut the leaves at the soil surface do they continue to grow or is that leaf done because you cut it?

Good morning gardeners. Welcome to all the newcomers to the thread. Our heatwave is supposed to be subsiding a bit. It got up to a disgustingly hot and humid 93F yesterday. I treated the chickens to some watermelon late in the day. I put a pound of peas in the freezer. I'll be putting up about a pound of green beans today as well. This morning I picked a cucumber and some more green beans. My butternut squash have flowers on them but I think they are male. I watered the fig tree, bell peppers and okras this morning. Will likely water all the big gardens later today. I have another flower starting to open on the okra. Hopefully this one gets to go into full bloom. I may be pulling my turnips soon. I was hoping to get some better root development on them this year, but it looks like I have more greens than root bulbs. Oh well. The greens are tasty and freeze well. I got a picture of my bird house gourd plant. They are about 6 feet tall now. Also, as a side note: I found a recipe for gluten free zucchini fritters. I thought of you @Sueby. I haven't tried this yet but it was in the latest issue of Bon Appetit magazine. Please excuse my scanning job. My scanner is acting up a bit. Have a great day everyone. Stay hydrated and well.

A Busy time of year right now, but I thought I'd share a couple of pics.
Here is the Athena Melon, a cantaloupe type. One melon is further along and getting its exterior netting developed, while the other one is not at that point yet. They look diseased when the netting starts! But then become more recognizable as cantaloupe.
Just a lovely garden pic - ripening tomatoes on a productive bush. FWIW, I plant carrots around the tomato plants. Its a fun surprise when we remove the tomato cages and plants later in the season and uproot lots of carrots. Apparently carrots play well with Tomatoes, according to companion planting advice, so I do it for the carrots and for the fall surprise!
Other melon plants: So, the challenge here is that they all vine, so not 100% on which melon belongs to which plant. I like to see one plant provide at least 2 melons, and it doesn't look like that is happening yet for all the plants. The Athena melon has 3 melons, the Moon and Stars watermelon has 2 on one vine, but the other vine I'm not sure has produced anything. Green nutmeg melon appears to have 1 melon, but maybe another is hiding - I don't think they get very big. I have 2 other watermelon types that are smaller types for cooler zones, and one has produced 2 melons, but they sure are small - and haven't grown for a couple of weeks! The other one looks like it might have 2 melons between 2 plants.
Cucumbers - they are doing well, but looks like one has succumbed to something. I may plant them later next year. Maybe we can avoid the cucumber beetle to some extent and have a little more time to can them.
LOTS of rain last night! And around 1/4" predicted for each of the next 2 days, so I'm happy with that.
