What did you do in the garden today?

Zucchini pickles mmm I wonder if I could make kimchi w zucchini cause I’ve got loads
Same basic principle, yeah you can do it. Fill a jar, add the sea salt brine water, add the spices you may or may not want to add, close it. Open it once a day to let out built up gasses. and in about 2 weeks it will likely be ready... may take more or less time depending on Temperature. It would actually taste good and you can store them if you have too many to eat this year summer. I cut up yellow squash and fermented it. Haven't eaten it yet but others have eaten squash this way and they all said it tasted great.

My watermelons (Sugar Baby and yellow-fleshed) haven't changed in size for a few weeks, so I picked one Sugar Baby. It weighed almost 12 ounces (all of them are about the same size). It was ripe, so I picked another. It was ripe, too!
I did some research, and I think the moles damaged the roots. Or the aphids (which I have ONLY found on the lettuce) got to the watermelons, too?
They were tasty, even though tiny! I might go pick the rest tomorrow.

I made a batch of the spicy pickles that called for zucchini but I used cucumbers and then I made a batch of tomatillo salsa. And you can’t even tell 🤣 I still have produce stacked all over everywhere!!
A friend of mine and her 2 daughters ( youngest starting kindergarten this year, the other one a few years older) came by today to see the puppies, chickens and garden. My daughter and a grandson stopped by too.
I let my friend “shop” in my canning closet and the garden and take home the eggs her girls found ( plus topped it off to make a full 18 pack!
She is thinking about getting 3 chickens for their house but figured it will be about a year before they have everything set up and ready.
I opened my last jar of corn and cherry tomato salsa from last year, so now I need to make more of that. This year I will use the corn I grew as well as the cherry tomatoes!
Oh, they also checked out the bee hives from a distance! 🐝

Good morning gardeners. I took a bit of a hiatus for a few days. The heat wave is over and here's hoping they are done for the season. Yesterday I picked a huge okra and this morning I hauled in 2 yellow squash, a zucchini, a cuke, more bush beans and some tomatoes. I want to get some chard planted, just not sure which bed to plant it in. My butternut squash are doing well with a couple starting to change colors. My potato plants are dying back, so hopefully I'll get a few potatoes out of them. Since I have started getting a Roma tomato or two now and then I believe I planted indeterminates. Just guessing. LOL! Have a great day everyone.

DH & I are trying to find a cooler place to retire, we hate this heat.
Come to the south Oregon coast, largely undiscovered by the masses, beautiful scenery, maybe 2 or 3 days a year in the 80's and a long growing season, especially if you have a greenhouse. We have a reputation for rain but from the middle of June through to the middle of September we get no rain to speak of.
Had a gallon of fresh puree from the tomato squishing party the other day. I simmered it down all day added some onion, garlic, salt and pepper and ZOWIE best tomato soup EVER!
That sounds so delicious!
You know I also think that weeds heal the soil.
At a minimum they keep the soil from running off in the rain and a lot of them bring in pollinators and left to it's own devices, nature heals a lot of wounds.
I got to go see my mom today.
I'm glad, and she looks very well cared for.
I made a batch of the spicy pickles that called for zucchini but I used cucumbers and then I made a batch of tomatillo salsa.
I'm going to try making some dehydrator zucchini chips later today.
Having lots of pissed off here had not heard from roofer .. called them oh he said he was going to call Riiiiggghhht .. next week now
That is the way it always is here. I can't tell you the number of times I've been told, "I'm sorry, I was going to call you yesterday." Just the cost of doing business here, no contractor or handy person is ever on time, or date for that matter.

Not much going on in the garden the last few days, just watering and sitting on my ripening tomatoes like I think they're going to hatch. :) Only got a gallon of the borage compost tea concentrate this time, I think the lid wasn't on tight enough and too much of the water evaporated. I got a couple of those screw on lids now so I should get more from here on. Oh and I decided what the smell reminded me of. Fermenting pickles! After that I didn't mind it at all anymore. :) My tiny baby cucumber plants are coming along, I nearly buried them in rabbit poop so they should grow up big and strong. Or smelly. Or both. Just as long as I get my cukes for pickling.

Oh and a question, I have a lot of dill right now but no cukes, should I dry the heads for later? I don't have any freezer space right now but I do have a dehydrator. Anyone have experience with drying and using the dried dill? And should I just dry the flowers or the foliage as well? Thanks in advance.
