What did you do in the garden today?

Planted more cucumber seeds to replace the seedlings the rogue chickens ate. Package says 53 days. Might squeak in before frost. It’s in a very sunny bed, so should stay pretty warm as it gets closer to harvest.

We lost a chick!!! We don’t know where he got to!!! No place to get out. However, I’ll have to ask the kid if they leave the brooder top open when they get fresh water ...I don’t think they leave it open though. We found a chick out the other day, so maybe 2 got out and not just that one we found. We haven’t heard any cheeping in unexpected places either!! No bits of fluff or feathers. A mystery!

Removed dead plants, cleaned another bed and covered with plastic. goal is to heat it up hot and it will hopefully kill weed seeds and bug larvae (I’m looking at you, cucumber beetle!)

counted the growing Green Nutmeg melons...I posted a pic yesterday of this small and green fleshed melon. There are 14 melons in various stages of growth!! I only planted 1 hill, and I think there were 2 plants in that hill. So, I’m happily impressed!

The regular butternut has 3 more growing squash, and another Female looks like it will flower tomorrow! If all these grow to harvest, that will make 11 butternuts from 1 plant!! I’m up to 7 already picked from this plant!

What problems do grasshoppers pose? What do they eat in the garden? Do they eat pole beans? Looks like something has been eating holes in my pole bean leaves for awhile and I see grasshoppers hop out sometimes, so wonder if they are the culprit.

@NewBoots have you tried the chips yet, how are they? Wondering if I should try some! & your weather sounds fab, I told DH about it & he said he doesn't want to go to the west coast. I'd go in a heartbeat, my aunt, uncle & cousin are out there & they love it. :idunno

That just cracked me up from beginning to end.

So I went with the nap. It didn't last long & we lost power. We had a big surge that must have fried something at our shared well house so now we have no water. We got a text from them saying when we do get water back we'll need to boil till they test it in 48 hours. Great. :barnie 5 days without power last week wasn't enough...

But on a fantastic note it's been raining allllll day! Not tons, just a light rain. We probably got .25 to .5 inches. Yay!
Zucchini chips are the best! especially w lemon pepper

They are beautiful!

I too have wished for pictures this year! And help knowing when I should harvest some items!!
I have peach trees but they have never done any good. I am sure part of the reason is because I have not sprayed them on a regular basis. (I wish I had a Missouri peach growing mentor that could call me and say, "Okay, go spray the peach trees today!" :lau
I don't believe that I have ever had a dried tomato.

Our August temperatures have been most unusual this year. Yesterday the high was 87. In the morning it was 77 with 97% humidity. Today the high was only 84 and the humidity was only in the 70's. Our August's are usually in the upper 90's with high humidity.

My hubby decided that zucchini fritters are the BEST way to eat zucchini. He is even asking me to fix them again and we just had them a few nights ago!
Today's haul from the garden: more cherry tomatoes, a couple of cucumbers, a zucchini, a bunch of tomatillos and I pulled all of my corn. I shucked and cut the kernels off ( in preparation for the salsa). I got 1 1/2 cups of corn kernels. Then I opened the frig and saw that I had 5 more small ears in there that I brought in the other day. :lau I'll have to shuck and cut the kernels off those tomorrow.
I made tomatillo salsa a few days ago. I tasted it last night. Very good flavor, but no heat. I will definitely make it again! :love

Tomorrow will be a busy day. I need to add a super to one bee hive and maybe a brood box to the other, cut grass, make zucchini bread, make corn & cherry tomato salsa, go see my Mom and find time to butcher a meat chicken. I still have 10 of them left to do. They have gotten huge!
Really dried cherry tomatoes are soooo incredible, nothing added, just dried to a crisp🤤

I think grass hoppers are only a problem if there are lots. My kids and I decided to cook some up, boiled for a minute then fried with o/e and onion salt, Amazing! They tasted like pistachios!

How do you store the butternut?

Howdy all !
Garden looks OK. Hail damage can take a couple days to appear on veg.

DH went back to the office today and DS is now back at University. This was the first day I've had the house to myself since the Middle of March! I gutted the house! 10 hours of cleaning EVERYTHING! If it didn't run away, it was cleaned. Spiders were smashed, webs knocked down, floors scrubbed, you name it!.

I even went after the garage.

It wasn't HORRIBLE, it was just cumulative ick. I could clean while they were here, but with all the meetings going on, quiet had to be maintained, and windows of opportunity were small.

Ahhh......

Have 6 pints of marinara in the canner. That started out as 20 #s that I pulled a few days ago. Another 40 is ripening on the counter.

They don't have the food halls going quite right at the university yet, so he's going out to eat and asking for me to send meals with DH. I hope they get their act in gear soon. I don't mind sending food, but we're paying BIG bucks for balanced meals at the university. So far, that's not happening.

OK, off to make supper. Have a great night all!

Lemon cukes at starting! Squash are coming on, zucchini’s for days. Hydrangea going crazy, the chickens eat the flowers. I’ve been setting up a brooding area for my broody hen that decided to set outside the coop. The birds are helping w construction. My potted peppers are rockin along with my tomatoes, I can’t wait to make zucchini salsa. And my clematis is finally doing what I want. I’ve got some ears in my tiny corn patch and I found an eggplant! ... also I can’t keep up to my blackberries

We grow Lemon Cucumbers every year. Nice, but they really get hit with wilt BAD! They are very susceptible. We also grey "Crystal Apple" cucumbers - seems similar to a Lemon cuke, but no yellow color, and more oblong (like some apples) than round. The Crystal Apple ones were not hit as bad with wilt, but we found them a touch bitter.
