Planted more cucumber seeds to replace the seedlings the rogue chickens ate. Package says 53 days. Might squeak in before frost. It’s in a very sunny bed, so should stay pretty warm as it gets closer to harvest.
We lost a chick!!! We don’t know where he got to!!! No place to get out. However, I’ll have to ask the kid if they leave the brooder top open when they get fresh water ...I don’t think they leave it open though. We found a chick out the other day, so maybe 2 got out and not just that one we found. We haven’t heard any cheeping in unexpected places either!! No bits of fluff or feathers. A mystery!
Removed dead plants, cleaned another bed and covered with plastic. goal is to heat it up hot and it will hopefully kill weed seeds and bug larvae (I’m looking at you, cucumber beetle!)
counted the growing Green Nutmeg melons...I posted a pic yesterday of this small and green fleshed melon. There are 14 melons in various stages of growth!! I only planted 1 hill, and I think there were 2 plants in that hill. So, I’m happily impressed!
The regular butternut has 3 more growing squash, and another Female looks like it will flower tomorrow! If all these grow to harvest, that will make 11 butternuts from 1 plant!! I’m up to 7 already picked from this plant!
What problems do grasshoppers pose? What do they eat in the garden? Do they eat pole beans? Looks like something has been eating holes in my pole bean leaves for awhile and I see grasshoppers hop out sometimes, so wonder if they are the culprit.
