What did you do in the garden today?

Gourds!
The birdhouse gourd is apparently tasty to the chickens! We found this yesterday - it was apparently too close to the fence. Looks pretty tender inside!

Here is that side of the chicken run. The birdhouse gourd is taking over! But producing nice shade for the chickens.

Just 'cause - chick pics!

So, pretty obvious male at 3 weeks - black feathers and prominent comb

Pretty - but not an obvious male yet, unless feather pattern indicates it, but first time with this breed.

We keep wondering if the one on left is female. Might be male, but the one on right is obviously a male - such a wide comb and color. The one on left is smaller in body with a less prominent comb. Time will tell as he could just be slower to mature.

Seem to be growing well. Like the color pattern.

Pretty chicks.

Can start to see the unique comb taking shape. The one on right - little development, and legs look a bit thinner...could it be a female? The one on left is pretty obviously a male.

These are fairly large for chicks.

Looking forward to the mature feather pattern!

So, today we have elevated the temporary fence enough to allow the chicks out into the run....hopefully they cannot get out of the main chain link run fence. We don't want to lose any more. However, 2 family members are out there working right by the fence, so they should be easily able to keep an eye out.

Where is "here"? Us gardeners want to know! You can even add it to your profile, so you don't need to be asked again.

@penny1960 my mom is still hanging in there. Some days ( or even hours) are better than others. Not much interest in eating except for things we bring up to her. My brother came up from Arkansas over the weekend to see her. His first visit he said she was pretty out of it but he went back again before heading home and had a much better visit.
She confuses reality at times but other times is accurate with what she knows and what is going on.

Did he fall asleep in the middle of things? or did he see you and pretend he was invisible?!

Day 4 of 8 in the high 90s with soul sucking humidity.

Drove an hour for bagels, then an hour home. LOL. HIt the grocery on the way, melting chores in the heat. :sick Taking a cool down break before packing bagels for the freezer.

I'll check the garden for red maters tomorrow.

Good morning gardeners. I'm right there with you on the weather @Sueby. Yesterday more thunderstorms rolled through in the afternoon and one more round of them again today. Walking through the garden this morning was like walking through a sauna. I now have three tiny poblanos forming. Hopefully there'll be more. I picked a colander full of blushing tomatoes. I was tempted to give them another day but with all the rain I think they could split easily. I have 4 nice sized butternut squash that are ripening well. There are more smaller ones that are still growing nicely. There are quite a few beans developing on the pole bean towers. and I should be harvesting some more cucumbers in a few days unless Louie the GH gets them first. I did my main grocery shopping yesterday. Starting to see some shortages again. My stove pellets are arriving in a few days so I need to finish cleaning the garage. Great rainy day activity. Which fritter recipe did you use @igorsMistress? Was it the gluten free version? I haven't tried that one yet. Also, a side note on the cucumber bread @Sueby, I think I liked that better than zucchini bread. I made small loaves and they froze quite well. Have a great day everyone and happy harvesting.
Not the gluten free. 1 c flour, egg, salt, sugar 1 lb zukes and half an onion I think. I might try the onion chopped but making them again tonight to have with the rest of the salmon.
