What did you do in the garden today?

Greetings to all, and especially those of you contending with smoke and fire. It's heart-rending to read about.
Today I moved some seedlings from the plastic punnets I germinated them in into peat pots. I planted some directly into peat pots, and wish I had done all the cucurbits that way. We have a drought every summer lately, so I am starting things like zucchinis earlier than I normally would, hoping to beat the dry weather. However, I would normally plant seeds of cucurbits straight into the ground, so I usually don't have to be careful about their vulnerability to root disturbance. Fingers crossed that they will all forgive me for transplanting them.

@Sueby That is so funny to see them in line like that. Adorable and funny. Love your coop too. Can't wait to finish mine. Though it won't be as nice as yours and a lot of others. I am definitely ok with that. Hearing multiple stories of how funny all y'alls chickens are with their nesting boxes makes me look forward to see how my girls will be when they start laying.

@Acre4Me your marshmallows look amazing.
@Compost King never thought of making my own hot sauce. May steal some cayenne peppers from the neighbors plants and do that. He grew several different peppers and doesn't use them. Homemade hot sauce to make my Buffalo sauce with sounds pretty interesting. Now to find some Hearing. Thanks for that idea.
@littledog glad your horses and good, and you have a good community to help with that. Was definitely a nice story to hear. Love people helping people help animals.
@drstratton sorry about the loss. Hope the nipples get there quickly too. Babies are too cute.

Okay, so what do you folks put on your messy burgers other than ketchup, mustard, and pickle relish? I use, fried onions, raw onions, sauteed mushrooms, fried bacon, sliced tomatoes, and sometimes bbq sauce.

I like onion ring with bbq. I like chili with picle and sauerkraut. Then I just like a normal extra everything burger too. Great now I'm singing Jimmy Buffet in my head.

Been busy trying to get everything ready for the storm apparently now coming right for us. I am just concerned with the amount of water and how slow this storm is moving sine we are on a watershed from the river. I covered the garden as best as I could. We secured the coop in progress. Wow @Battles house - be safe! I heard that last night, how slow it was moving.

@Kiwibird I always direct sow my seeds too but am considering starting them in the house this year because of the darn squash bugs! I really don't have the room to do starts in the house though.

@littledog - wow! What a scary few days there! I'm so glad the horses safe & everyone came together.

@NewBoots I usually make burgers with a super thick slice of tomato, lettuce, mayo, pickles & half an avocado. Or I will make a garlic avocado aioli. I avocado.

& I can't remember who else I wanted to address...

We got 2 chip drops yesterday so I was able to start working on the bee/butterfly area. DH dumped me a ton of chips, it's a good 6-8 inches thick & should be a good start for the garden. Well see what happens, it's a lot of shade & is pretty much all fenced in on the back side of the coop - it would make a nice broody/grow out area...

Got my first jar of peppers fermenting!

Good morning gardeners. I had medical appointments pretty much all day yesterday. Since the VA hospital has finally opened up regular face to face appointments they like to cram as many into one day as possible. So this morning it was 40F. The morning temps will be flirting with frost by Sunday so I expect the garden to shut down completely soon.I'm hoping my developing okras will be large enough to harvest before then. I picked a very few cherry tomatoes this morning along with 3 jalapenos, a 1/4 pound of green beans and my wounded butternut squash. I removed the duct tape bandage and I believe the majority of its 2 1/2 pounds will be useable. I'm going to start bringing in my "overwinter" plants indoors starting today. I've decided I'm going to try overwintering the impatiens. They are getting harder to find every year here in New England and in warmer climates they are perenials so I hope I can keep them alive. I'm canning the last of the tomatoes today. They are all Romas so I may just make sauce since that is not as labor intensive as peeling then canning diced tomatoes. I also have over 2 pounds of green beans to process and freeze. My professional pellet stove cleaning is scheduled for a week from this Friday, however, I just may have to clean it as best as I can in a day or two in case I need to use it before then. The temp in the sunroom was only 61F earlier so that's getting a bit nippy. So glad to hear you are doing ok @littledog. I'm a little jealous that you can actually find pork belly in the stores @igorsMistress. I would love to make my own bacon but the closest I've found is a small, barely one pound piece of pork belly. I need to check with some of the local butcher shops (very few of them as well anymore) and see if I can find a 2 to 3 pound piece. Best of luck with that storm @Battles house. We are getting ready to go on a short trip today, so not much going on in the garden! We are going to pick honeydew, crenshaw, watermelon, tomatoes and cucumber to take with us! So just an easy day!

I took a picture of my rooster yesterday, he has a crazy tail feather...lol! You can see the garden behind him just past the sunflowers that we planted for our flock! You can also see the smoke that we've been dealing with...I pray that they can get the fires put out soon, it has been so devastating!

@Wee Farmer Sarah it seems waaaay too early for frost! Thankfully you are a bit further north than me, I need a few more weeks, lol. I have TONS of green tomatoes that I would love to have more time. Last year I pulled all the green ones & ripened every single one inside & it worked well so I'm prepared to do it again if I have to.

We've got quite a haze outside from the fires, it's insane that it's made its way all the way here to CT. Hoping for rain for the west coast.

We can definitely use some rain...thanks! We do that with our green tomatoes every year, we've had them ripen past Thanksgiving, it's a great way to extend the harvest!

We do have some haze in our skies as well. My tomatoes are pretty much done. Just a few cherry tomatoes here and there. The last batch of sauce is simmering on the stove. My neighbor just texted me to let me know the local bobcat is out and about. I guess the cooler air has him a little hungrier than usual. I need to clean the coops while they are free ranging later. Hopefully the bobcat will be gone by then. Is that a Buff Orpington rooster Rene? He looks very much like my little golden girl BO’s.
