I think it might be too icky this week to actually meet my Jan 15th planting date - peas, lettuces and some brassicas.

Ah! Lucky! What river do you live on? I am obsessed with finding a waterfront property of some type. MUST be something bigger than a pond! I lived on the cliffs above the Pacific for six months in Mexico and haven't been 100% happy with life since, hahaha. Something about seeing and hearing water constantly just makes me feel... more grounded. (No pun intended!)

I'm kinda sorta doing soil testing though.

you're supposed to mix the soil with water and let the sediment settle and ... well idk if that's working or not.

I saw a YouTube Gardener who used the wire mesh that is put into concrete to reinforce it. To me, it looks a lot like cow panels.... Since it can be quite expensive to purchase that mesh in rolls, he suggested reaching out to concrete installers and asking if you can take their scraps. Supposedly those wire rolls last FOREVER and are very sturdy. I haven't tried this though....but I've thought about it.

I have two rolls in the shed actually. There's panels for concrete also, which are more rigid. I think the rolls would make good DIY cages with the use of some wire cutters and zip ties or wire ties. The reinforcement panels could be used as a trellis. The only problem is that the concrete reinforcement materials can rust. You can get a coated version, but you pay for it.

The snow is melting here, but still cold outside. The chickens are out and about in the yard, the dogs are curled up on the couch. I am here trying to figure out my garden this year. I would like an herb garden as well as tomatoes, zucchini , carrots, onions, black eye peas and maybe watermelon. I have never had good luck with greens but will try celery and spinach.

In TX, plant greens really early or late. They don't care for the heat. Most greens will do well in partial or even full shade, which might keep them cooler there also.

We've had flurries all day here just south of Memphis, but it's not really sticking. Still too wet and cold for my liking to be outdoors. I have about five billion yards of mulched leaves I need to spread over the garden, but that can wait, LOL.

Luckily we didn't have enough snow to mess with my row cover hoops, though admittedly it would likely take a lot as I way over-engineered those hoops, LOL. I haven't checked, but I'm sure all the winter greens are happy as little clams under their agribon blanket.

I still have lettuce in the garden, but we dont get snow - occasionally and, like @Artichoke Lover said, it'll shut us DOWN when we do - but none this year so far.

My friend mixed up the soil samples yesterday impatiently so I redid them today to be safe. The instructions said to let the soil dry so it's easier to work with so I started over today with the samples that had been drying overnight. Mixed with water and left to settle at the moment.

Meanwhile, up in here in the cold frozen north...

We have had maybe 5 inches of snow at my house, total, for the season so far. We might get some more the end of the week/over the weekend, but that's after all that's here melts first.

I am NOT complaining. (Hubby is.) I think the weather people said February was going to have more snow. I can deal with that, I suppose.

So everybody who is getting snow who normally doesn't, I'm sorry.

I'm about 2 hours west of you. It's sunny today but COLD. Even walking to the mailbox was like "ugh...." Jan & Feb are the two coldest months for us. I'm already over winter and ready for spring...ha ha. I hate being outside in the cold so while I'm DAYDREAMING a lot about what I want to do the in garden, I dread going outside to start any of it (like mulching the truckloads of dead leaves that are in my yard too....).
