What did you do in the garden today?

I went up to the green house today and filled the 70-some toilet paper roll pots I made with compost. It's a little chunky, so I'm going to put some potting soil in for the top 1/4-1/2 inch. The air in there was 78 degrees, but the soil is only 55. Still too chilly to start the heat lovers like tomatoes and peppers. I hope it warms up in the next few days; I want to get the seeds planted!

Started a bunch more seeds in the greenhouse this morning, one last tomato (Buffalosteak), a couple summer squash, some assorted greens (including a baby bok choy), some peppers, and some more lettuce. The tomatoes started earlier have all sprouted except for the Early Girl :he, kind of ironic I guess. Some of the lettuce and chard are nearly big enough to transplant out to the beds. I'm going to start a bunch more chard for tucking into unused spaces, it's so pretty and delicious as well and never has much of the slug or snail problem, just a few here and there. In fact we just today ate the end of last years crop, it wintered over just fine.

Spent the morning bent over hand cutting grass and clover for the chickens and rabbits. Still too wet here to mow so there's plenty to cut. I have my pod casts to listen to and the sun is out and it all becomes kind of zen. Helped DP dig the hole for the new Ocean Spray in the hedgerow and filled the extra space with planting soil instead of the sand and rocks that came out of the hole. Paying for it all now but heaven bless ibuprofen. :)

Potted up the roots and a 6 pack of tomatoes . Disappointed in the roots from Walmart as some were dead . Darn green bags hide what is inside . Only buying in clear bags in the future . Other sources were alive .

Last year I bought some raspberries, blueberries, and grapes from Walmart. Never again. They never came out of dormancy. All dead.... Same problem with stuff from TSC.

Believe it or not, everything I've purchased from Lowe's has been in really good condition. Even better than the local nursery... Same with my local employee owned grocery. I bought some really NICE fruit trees (Pink Lady apple, dwarf peach, and a red plum) for $25/each. All the trees had to be 2 - 3 years old already. I think the apple tree is almost 7 ft tall! The peach and plum are easily 4 - 5 ft each....

Okay cleaned the brooder also

I got up at 6 am today to get my morning feed chores done by 7 am. I've been sitting on a video conference call for work for 9 hrs straight. I think my butt is numb.... And I'm so mentally exhausted now that all I want to do is take a nap.... 😴

Garden work might have to wait until Wednesday (supposed to rain tomorrow). My Brandywines have FINALLY sprouted but I have ZERO energy to do it today.
