What did you do in the garden today?

ONE INCH! and they follow the scent of the mice, who urinate while they walk everywhere and leave a scent trail. The mink find that tiny hole and VERY quickly enlarge it if they have to. He chewed up and through a rubber floor mat to get to what he though was a mouse hole, but turned out to be hardware cloth. Tried to dig in SIX places around the coop/run, until he found that mouse hole at a corner, where there was a gap in the cloth. Boom. IN.

It's creepy how quiet the coop is with only a dozen birds in there. Can't tell me they don't miss the others. The whole pecking order is screwed up. The rooster has been calling all day. Breaks my heart.

Even the alpacas knew something was wrong. They just watched and watched while I cleaned. Sat and looked. UGH!
Just look how sad.View attachment 2592145

I was attacked (mauled, really) by 4 dogs when I was 5 yrs old. Spent many months in the hospital. And when my daughter was 4 yrs old, she was attacked by a stray Chow in our backyard. I take dog attacks very seriously. And I LOVE dogs.... But I have ZERO compassion for an aggressive dog against people/property/animals where it doesn't belong. I'd be telling the neighbors that the next time their dog comes on my property, it is a dead dog. This is their one and only warning.
Yeah I would suggest to them that dead dogs don't bite.

I hate slugs. Like, you have no idea my absolute hatred for the slimy beasts. I haven't had them in my strawberries yet but I'm sure it is a matter of time. A couple of years ago, I purchased some copper tape and put it around all my containers to keep the little buggers out. The problem with that long term is that copper corrodes and is no longer effective. I need a way to keep them out of my strawberries (planted in tires) before they find them.
Chickens LOOOVVVEEE slugs

Copper works well also. Got any pennies laying around?

Chickens LOOOVVVEEE slugs
Chickens may love slugs....just I don't want to touch them. I don't even want to touch anything that is touching them (in close range). Ick.

I can't bring my chickens into the garden because it is too close to the road and, well....they wouldn't discriminate between slugs and everything else like my strawberries.

I've heard you can also mostly bury an almost empty beer can with the top cut off (just use can openers and be careful about the edge). Throw a bunch of salt in the bottom and it'll kill the slugs when they crawl in for the beer. Works on snails too. Change out as needed, and yes, it'll be a bit gross inside.
